If you want to live closer to the
Earth and be more self sufficient but are not sure how to begin, this is the course for you. Come and have a
“taste of Permaculture “and a more sustainable lifestyle, whether you only have a window box or own many acres. Join Stew, Bee and 11 year old Lee on Merri Bee Organic
Farm, and be inspired to make exciting lifestyle changes in and outside the home. The weekend includes a tour of the 27 acre farm, wandering through glorious food forests, some 25 years old, and visiting many friendly farm animals along the way. We may see a chick hatching or a lamb being born as August is nearly spring time.
Equip yourself with vital skills necessary for sustainable living and peak oil.
During our weekend seminars you will gather knowledge from a couple who have provided most of their own meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts, herbs, condiments, bread and dairy produce for over 25 years and are keen to share their experience in soil creation, seed saving, moon planting, rainwater harvesting, animal husbandry and energy efficient building with you!
Withdraw your support from multinational agribusiness / pharmaceutical corporations by simply refusing to eat their GMOs, pesticides, food additives, nanno particles, hormones, irradiation, antibiotics , heavy metals ect. Industrial food corporations are serving these up to us every day and food labels aren’t telling us. Get back to eating compost grown plants which resist pest and disease and in turn give animals and us a happy healthy life . Shrink your carbon footprint!
Over the weekend starting about 5.30 pm on Friday August 5th and ending after lunch on Sunday August 7 th we will :
* Cover Permaculture design which shows us how to arrange elements so that our house and garden conserves or generates energy and feeds us.
Emphasis will be on “creating warm micro climates”and
“weeds make delicious eggs”.
*Get our hands into the earth! Make compost, compost teas, learn worm farming and see for yourself the magical results of worm castings and organic matter. Also taste the difference, and learn what compost does for our health.
*Milk a cow; learn the basics of keeping your house cow healthy plus an introduction to making your own dairy products .
*Learn the huge benefits of poultry keeping. Who needs “Weed and Feed” when you have a chicken tractor?
*Bake stunning sourdough bread. Using various organic grains we will grind flour and then to make sourdough bread. Using dried fruits and nuts from the farm we’ll create our famous fruit and nut loaf. Take some home to delight your friends and family.
*Tour the farm , inspecting the passive solar human and animal housing, greywater re-use system, intensive gardens, nursery, general plant propagation areas, poultry sheds and runs, compost production, worm farm, wicking bed, mature rare fruit and nut trees, and lots more.
Being August , a range of Fruit and nut trees , asparagus crowns, herbs, berries , tagasaste, onion seedlings and other permaculture plants will be available at reasonable prices .
Stay in the comfortable mudbrick farmhouse hand built by Bee some 15 years ago (early birds get choice of a single, a twin or a double room)
As part of a small group (maximum 10) you’ll take part in an extensive guided tour of the farm and see more than 90 different mature species of plants that provide fodder, fruit, timber, nuts craft materials or bee forage. Admire the happily grazing free range pigs, sheep, cows and ducks and marvel at the developing bamboo collection. See how nutrients are recycled in this thriving eco system.
Share the planting, harvesting, and preparation of 100 % organic meals together , swap stories, browse our extensive library of relevant books and
DVDs, or wander down to the beautiful Blackwood River pool which borders this very special 27 acre property only 4 kms from the town.
Enjoy the ever changing view from the balcony, gaze at the stars from your bedroom window and listen to the frogs. Be surrounded by literally hundreds of birds, meet fascinating insects and lizards. Please bring sturdy shoes for gardening and ugg boots for inside. We have organic cotton bedding and towels and organic soaps and shampoos to share with you.
