Driver Education Course Syllabus Instructor: Erin Hool Class Location: Room 50 in New Gym Availability: planning period or after school Phone: (334) 705-6030 Email: hool.emily@lee.k12.al.us Course Goal To prepare students with the material and skills needed to safely maneuver an automobile on the roadways of the state of Alabama. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Apply traffic laws and the Rules of the Road to various roadway situations and conditions. 2. Develop the essential decision making skills needed for safe operation of a motor vehicle. 3. Describe general performance capabilities of motor vehicles as well as physical and natural factors that affect vehicle control systems. 4. Describe the legal and moral responsibilities for someone involved in a traffic accident, the financial responsibility, and minimum insurance coverage mandated by the state of Alabama. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of DUI laws to assure students make appropriate decisions regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs before operating or riding in a motor vehicle. 6. Demonstrate basic knowledge of operations, skills, and laws pertaining to motorcycles and how they related to automobile traffic. 7. Demonstrate skill and competency in performing basic maneuvers in operation of a motor vehicle in actual driving conditions. 8. Develop an understanding of basic vehicle care. Materials and Text 1. Alabama Driver Manual Course Website www.dps.alabama.gov Make Up Work Making up work is your responsibility. In accordance to the Lee County Board of Education and Loachapoka High School Handbook, you will be given three (3) days in order to make up work missed from an absence. There is a designated place in the classroom where you will be able to pick up and turn in all assigned work, including make-up work. Extra Credit There will be extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. I will let you know when these opportunities will be made available. Classroom Supplies 3 ring binder Pocket folder Paper Pen/pencils Classroom Policies and Procedures *Students MUST know and follow all rules in the student handbook in addition to classroom rules mandated by the teacher. 1. Be in your designated area when the tardy bell sounds. 2. Follow directions the first time. If you do not understand, WAIT PATIENTLY for the teacher to finish, and then ask POLITELY for the directions to be repeated. 3. Arguing will not be done in this classroom. Concerns must be discussed with the teacher PRIVATELY before or after class or by submitted to the teacher in writing after class. 4. Abstain from eating, drinking, chewing gum, and personal grooming in our classroom. 5. Respect the rights and property of others at all times. 6. Be courteous to your teacher and classmates. This includes any substitute teacher or visitor who may enter our classroom. 7. At the end of the period, remain in your seat until you are dismissed. The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell. 8. Heads should remain off the desks while you are in this classroom. 9. Writing on the furniture or walls is not permitted. This behavior will result in IMMEDIATE detention to be served the following day after school. Detention will be held in Room 50 from 3:00 to 3:45 and you will be responsible for securing a ride home. 10. **************This is a NO BULLY ZONE!!!!************************ If in violation, an immediate detention will be enforced and you will be required to write a two (2) page essay stating the behavior and why it was unacceptable. The paper will also need to include how you plan on preventing the behavior from occurring in the future. This is STRICTLY ENFORCED! Severe Behaviors: o Fighting o Cursing/use of profanity/vulgar language o Physical assault o Verbal abuse of teacher **Severe behavior will result in immediate referrals to the principal or school resource officer. All school policies will be enforced regarding to these behaviors. Consequences for Disruptive Behavior #1: verbal warning (minor offense), unless the discipline code calls for a referral. #2: verbal warning AND parent contact. If a conference is necessary, it will be scheduled by the parent and teacher. #3: verbal warning AND detention. Parent contact will also be made to discuss the potential of a behavior modification plan through the RtI referral process. #4: If a problem persists, a discipline referral will be given to the principal. Specific Behavior Violations o o I am particularly stern with enforcing the consequences for insubordination towards a teacher. Please do not try to argue with the teacher. I will not argue with you. If you feel that you were wrongly identified as misbehaving, make a point to speak with the teacher PRIVATELY and IN A CALM MANNER or submit your explanations in writing after class or after school. I will see to it that your concern will be addressed. If you do not follow these procedures, then you will receive detention for insubordination. This policy is for the good of the group as a whole; please respect that decision.
