STAFF DEVELOPMENT TEAM – OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL FORTHCOMING EVENTS DECEMBER 2010 Quality and Standards Programme Development and Approval Date: Time: Tuesday 7 December 2010 10.15 am – 12.15 pm A session for programme developers and approvers which will explain the process of getting a programme developed and approved, the rationale behind those requirements, and the support and guidance opportunities available to help programme developers. This session also provides an opportunity to share examples of good practice and is appropriate for members of partner institutions. By the end of the session participants will have gained an understanding of: the University’s quality and standards framework as it relates to programme approval, including the way this reflects external expectations such as the QAA’s Academic Infrastructure the different stages of approval and their purpose the tools available to help programme developers, such as the Learning Outcomes Tool opportunities to obtain further guidance and support in developing a programme Led by: Chris Cagney, University Quality Officer. Student Recruitment The Postgraduate Admissions Process - An introduction Date: Time: Tuesday 7 December 2010 2.15 pm – 4.05 pm This workshop is designed for all those involved in the admissions of postgraduate students but will also be of most use to those new to the process. An overview of the University's postgraduate admissions process will be given with a particular focus on working with international applicants. Specially, participants will have the opportunity to: identify the responsibilities of all colleagues involved in recruiting and admitting postgraduate students recognise the experience of international students at the University and understand their needs Presented by: Sheila Dowling, Head of the Admissions Service; and James Richardson, Director of the International Office. English Language Provision at the University of Hull Date: Time: Thursday 9 December 2010 10.00 am – 11.00 am An opportunity to find out how the EFL section in the Department of Modern Languages can help with international or non-native students’ applications (undergraduate and postgraduate) in terms of their language ability. This briefing session will give an overview of the English language provision within the department as well as advice on how to determine whether students will cope with the linguistic demands of the programme of study they have chosen. Well-Being Energise You Date: Time: Wednesday 8 December 2010 11.00 am – 3.00 pm This is a unique opportunity for members of staff to have a one-to-one massage with a fully trained practitioner. The Energise You On-Site Chair Massage will leave YOU feeling energised. The massage is undertaken by trained practitioners in a specially designed chair using acupressure points and Japanese massage techniques on the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands directed at 60 specific stress points. The benefits. Treats and prevents: muscular tension headaches back pain repetitive strain injury (RSI) reduces stress and boosts energy levels enhances creative thinking and improves problem solving boosts your immune system and leaves you feeling energised By the end of the session participants will understand how massage can be used to help us with the stresses and strains of everyday life. This taster event consists of ten, 20 minute time slots. An individual will book a time slot and attend at the designated time and place (on campus) at which time they will receive their personal 20 minute massage. Staff will be asked to fill in a health questionnaire prior to their treatment. The session will not involve the use of any oils and no special clothing will be required. Please note: a charge of £20 will be made for anyone failing to attend at their allotted time. Led by: Energise You Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Funding – is there still some out there? Date: Time: Wednesday 8 December 2010 12.15 pm – 1.30 pm (lunch provided) This session identifies which routes to funding are still available to universities in this challenging fiscal environment and how the Knowledge Exchange can help those interested in securing such funding for their work. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) Date: Time: Wednesday 15 December 2010 12.15 pm – 1.30 pm (lunch provided) The session will give an overview of how KTPs work and their benefits to academic supervisors, company partners and associates involved. It will also provide an understanding of the process involved and the support available to staff who wish to develop a partnership. Student Information Systems On-line Module Enrolments on the AIS Date: Time: Monday 13 December 2010 10.15 am – 12.00 noon This session is for all staff involved in the processes related to student module enrolment. It will outline the University requirements in this area and demonstrate how the AIS and the student portal can be used together to allow students to enrol on optional and free elective modules on-line. Student Progress and Assessment Issues Student Progress Issues - Help for departments, help for students Date: Time: Wednesday 15 December 2010 10.15 am – 12.00 noon A session for staff in academic departments and support services with an interest in, or responsibility for, dealing with student progress cases, particularly (but not limited to) exams officers and personal supervisors. Departmental secretaries who have not attended a previous similar event may also find the session useful. The event will discuss the various problems that students’ encounter which have an impact on their academic progress. It will also investigate ways in which academic and other departments may deal with such problems and in particular how to help students by making requests for action through the University Student Progress Committee. These may include (but not be limited to) repeat periods, intercalations, and action regulations notwithstanding. Academic Development Peer Observation Date: Time: Monday 20 December 2010 2.15 pm – 3.45 pm This event is appropriate for members of academic staff who are due to observe others, or who are to be observed, during the next academic session. The participative workshop will provide an overview of the University peer observation scheme and code of practice with reference to Faculty specific documentation and procedure. Personal Supervision – pastoral care or academic advice? Date: Time: Tuesday 21 December 2010 10.15 am – 12.05 pm This short event is aimed at academic staff who undertake the role of a personal supervisor for students. The session aims to encourage debate within the academic community on the changing role of the personal supervisor, discuss ways in which student difficulties might be overcome and to provide guidance to individuals on the structure of such meetings.
