Student Review Sheet for Waves, Beaches and Coasts

1.

What is an ocean wave? What is the original source of energy? How does the water inside the wave move? What causes the wave to slow down and break? What happens to the wave’s energy when it breaks upon the shoreline?

2.

What causes tsunamis? How does it differ from the more typical type of oceanic wave?

3.

Imagine a grain of sand originating by the decomposition of a granitic boulder high in the mountains. In your mind or on paper, follow that grain through the river systems, to a beach, through the longshore drift, and ultimately to the seafloor via a submarine canyon.

Be sure that you understand how dams along rivers and seawalls on beaches can interrupt the transportation of sand grains along these natural pathways.

4.

Sea level has risen and fallen throughout geologic history, but scientific evidence indicates that it is currently rising at extremely rapid rather because of human activities. Be sure that you understand how human activities can cause changes in sea level. Think about the impacts that increases in sea level will have on your life. Whether you live along the oceans or further inland
