RÉSUMÉ - HANK SAXE & CYNTHIA PATTERSON ART IN PUBLIC PL ACES COMMISSIONS • ORACLE BLOSSOM . Tucson, AZ. The Ci ty selected us to d esign, fabricate and install this gateway sculpture at a major intersection as part of the Grant Road (at Oracle Road) Improvement Project. The artists met with the design team and community groups, in the process of creat ing Oracle Blossom which celebrates the new life of Grant Road, honors the nearby Pascua Yaqui Tribe traditions and recognizes the ic onic neon signage of Oracle Road, the historic entrance to Tucson. Complet ed October 2013. • CONFLUENCIA. Bert Williams Downtow n Transfer Center, El Paso, Texas. We created artwork for the main entrance that functions as a welcoming gateway for pedest rians and commuters enter ing the Terminal. Constructed of structural steel, ca st concrete and glass mosaics, this sculpture references the sun and the Rio Grande, important symbols for the City. All aspects of this project were either performed by or under the direct supervision o f the artists. Completed September 2009. • SPRINGWATER DANCERS. Oklahoma Ci ty Educa re chose us to design artwork for 3 locati ons at the new Educare preschool/daycare facility. W e created abstract insect and plant images for bas -reli ef i nsets in the exteri o r pre-cast concrete wall. Hand -made ceramic and glass tile was hand -cut and inset into the reces sed areas. Sculptural forms in unique shapes and colors were used to clad s tructural steel colu mns on the exterior portico. Fabric sculptures – bees and dragon flies – are suspended from the ceil ing of the interior piazza. 200 9 –10. • MARIPOSA FALLS is a multi -part sculpture created for the Queen Creek AZ Library. Located at the entrance to the library this work relates to the history of Queen Cr eek as an agricult ural community and the importance of water for life in the desert environment. We worked cl osel y with the select ion committee and Town Council to create a meaningful sculpture to enhance the public’s experience using the library and attending events in the large plaza area. Completed D ecember 2008. • LA COMP UERTA is a series of sculptures constituting the artwork component of the L os Candelarias Vi lla ge Streetscape Improvements. This wa s a two-phase projec t to create artwork for a roadway in an old Albuquer que farming community that is now primarily resid ential. Duri ng Phase I we worked as artists on a design team with the landscape architects and City redevel opment staff to develop ideas and components for streetscape art. In response to an in -d epth public process the team worked within the context of the neighborhood's culture, history, and natural environment. Phase II was the production and installation of artw ork along Candelari a Road in conjunct ion with the construction of street improvements. We design ed and installed a system of fiber optic lighti ng for nighttime ill umination of the sculpture. Commissioned by the City of Albuquerque. Completed April 2007 . • EL JARDIN serves a s an identifying landmark and icon for the E. Las Vegas Community/Senior Cente r. El J ardin was presented the 2006 Las Vegas Mayor’s Urban Design Award/Public Art. This sculpture responds to the center’s architectural theme and the Hispanic heritage of the community. The artwork, abstractly representing a desert garden, is comprised of 8 graceful columnar forms rising from the front plaza. Light -weight cast concrete was used to create the shapes that are faced with glass mosaics and colorful, hi gh fire, glazed ceramic tile. Textured til e surfaces were desi gned specificall y for this pr oject. This a rtwork is at a busy intersection where it is easi ly seen by 1 pedestrian and vehicular traffic. We designed and install ed a fiber optic lighting system utilizing 31 fixtures to illuminate this wor k. Additionall y, we conducted a ceramics workshop with high school students that emphasized the requirements and considerations assoc iated with creating artwork for public installations. Commissioned by the City of Las Vegas (NV) Arts Commission. Completed Jul y 200 6. • LA ACEQUIA is an a rray of sculptur es based on the theme of acequias (irrigation ditches) and the plantlife t hey nurture, created for a 5 -acre neighborhood park in Santa Fe, NM. The sculpture forms were created on sit e using cast concrete and finished with custom ceramic tile that we design ed and produced at our studio. We worked with the Neighborhood Association t o make certain the artwork fulfill ed thei r objectives and conducted a workshop with neighborhood high school students to introduce them to issues relat ed to the creation of pub lic art. Commission ed by the City of Santa Fe. 2004. • MAX'S MINARETS is an outdoor sculpture comprised of six cast concrete columnar forms clad with frost proof mosaic tile. W e for mulated the ceramic materials to withstand winter conditions to 30 degrees b elow zero and repeated freeze -th aw cycles. This installation marks the entrance to the Taos Campus of the Univ ersity of New Mexic o. Commissioned by the Art in P ublic Places Program of New Mexic o Arts. With the help of ou r employees, we performed all phases of this project i ncluding design, concrete forming and placing; tile des ign, production and installation. 1997. • SOCORRO MOUNTAIN MAP is a high relief c erami c tile mural interpretation of the Soc orro Mountain and Rio Grande Va lley t opography near Socorro, NM. Cast stoneware tiles for ming the mural are mounted on a lobby/atrium wall of the NM Energetic Materials Res earch and Testing Center in Socorro. Th e til i n g is 9’ x 8’ with individual til es approximately 16” x 16 ” x 4” reli ef. Commissi oned by New Mexic o Arts. We performed all phases of the project with our employees. 1997. • ALBUQUERQUE MANDALA used high fire (cone 10) ceramic tile t o create a geometric mosa ic pattern installed as a floor medall ion in the atrium of the Juvenile Justic e Center, Albuquerque, NM. The matte glazed tile was d esigned and produced specifically f or this installation in a c omplex 7 -fold radiall y symmetric pattern 10’ in diameter. Comm issioned by the Bernalill o County.1996. • LADDER/SHADOW/LIGHT is a c eramic tile mosaic installed in the atrium of the Library/Adult Education Building, University of NM, Los Alamos. The geometric pattern for the tiling was designed by Dr. Sir Roger Penros e and made of hand -made, high fire, gla zed tile produced at our studio. The tilin g is applied to surfaces of the cast concrete building including a first floor c olumn, stairway walls, and extending into the skylight and the surrounding ceiling. We produced ceramic elements for this project using a combination of bas -relief and flat fiel d tile in a rep etitive "l eaf" pattern. Individual reli ef til e modules up to 8" x 16" x 3 1/2 " are ca st of reinforced porcelain. Field til e are die -cut stonew are. Finished col ors are achieved by applying layers of underglazes and glazes to the ti le tha t are high -fired to cone 10. The 6' hig h x 17' long wall is surrounded by a pool that is 8 1/2' w ide x 23' long. Water spills down the ti le - covered wal l into a shallow til ed pool. We produced the ceramic element s for this fountain and surrounding seating using arrays of large format bas -relief ti le that depict a collage of plant l ife in a kaleidosc opic pattern. Individu al tile modules up to 21" x 15" x 3" are cast of reinforced p orcel ain. Finished colors are achieved by ap plying layers of un derglazes and glazes to the til e that are high-fired to cone 10. Overall f ountain and seating diameter is 18'. Height i s 18". In our studio, we designed fabr ication systems and devel oped ceramic materials and colors used to create 50 0 square feet of ba s relief t ile in modul es up to 12 x 18 x 3 inches. This high fire til e was install ed on six ext erior freestanding masonry walls arranged in two groups of three walls that have a footprint of 29 feet x 9 feet x 9 feet ea ch. The tiles are three-dimensional abstract images of ocean waves from artwork by Anne Marie Karlsen. These ti le walls mark the entrance to the Playa P acifica townhouses, Culver City, CA.
