MATRIK : A144636 NAMA PENILAI : DR. NOR FARAH MOHAMAD FAUZI SELF-REFLECTION ON WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY 2014 Each year on 8th November, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotheraphy programme will held an event of World Radiography Day. Basically, this programme is to cherish and appreciating the role of radiographers from all over the world, and also to spread the knowledge and increase the awareness among radiography students on the current news and technology in the radiography field. On the annual meeting of World Radiography Day (WRD) board member, I was chosen to become the committee member for the “Tugas-Tugas Khas” (TTK) secretariat. It was indeed an honour to be chosen, but also personally I feel quite reluctant to accept this spot, as from what I have known, the responsibility of this secretariat involve the T-shirt designing, which I feel that it would be something impossible for me to design a T-shirt as I am neither artistic nor someone good in computer software. What is the meaning of life without taking any risk to face the challenges, right? Therefore, I just decided to accept this spot whole-heartedly. Then, there came the first problem. The board member of the WRD 2014 asked us to design a few T-shirt designs to be chosen as our official WRD T-shirt for that year. That situation is really challenging my personal critical thinking on how I am going to design a shirt, when in fact, I do not even have the knowledge or any experience in using the computer designing software such as Photoshop and others. By that time, the only thing that came across my mind was to use Paint in Windows to design a shirt, but then, that idea was pretty lame as I realized that I did not even knew how used Paint to design a shirt. It is really not my type to give up easily, so in order to solve this problem, I tried to find some online tutorials on shirt designing. That was when I found an online website for Tshirt designing, CustomInk.com. I tried to use my critical thinking to learn this online software in a short time and to design the shirt needed using the details provided by the board member, as this shirt would also be opened for order to other radiography students from other university. To be honest, I was not depending on this website totally, where I have to learn from my friends on how to use Photoshop in producing the designs needed. After several attempts, I have obtained few shirt designs to be presented during the coming meeting. After two meetings, the board member decided to choose one of my designs to be the official shirt for the WRD 2014. I was so elated because besides I got to see my design to be worn around, I also gained lots of new knowledge in T-shirt production and also I can increase my critical thinking skills in solving the problems, which is in my case it involving my incapability in using the computer editing software. Instead of depending only on online designing software to solve this problem, I chose to learn some simple editing in Photoshop from my friends, so that someday I could apply what I have learnt in some other programme in future. On the day of the programme, I was asked to handle the cancer and X-ray Instrumentation poster presentation, and also the pitching competition slot. As I have also never experienced it before, it really give me a rush to handle this programme alone. Therefore, as I know I could not handle this task alone, I have decided to ask one of my friends to help me. By using the critical thinking and problem solving skills, I tried my hardest to make sure that the flow for the poster presentation from the second year students and also the pitching competition slot from the fourth year students went smooth without any interruption and careless mistakes from me. First of all, I divided the task between both of us and I explained our job scope, so that we would not have an overlap task. Based on our agreement, I was going to handle the judges and she would handle the participants. Then, on that day, we did as what we have planned earlier. I went for judges’ briefing on the marking scheme and also the criteria that were needed to be judged. The day before the programme happened, I have done some research on the topic for the pitching competition, so that if the judges asked me to explain to them a bit on the topic, I could explain briefly to them. This is one of the way how I developed the critical thinking skills through this programme. It was quite a whole new experienced to me and I was so grateful that both poster presentation and pitching competition slot went great. I was preparing the judging form before the arrival of judges. The preparation for poster presentation. Final preparation before the pitching competition started. It is not going to be a good programme if all of the organization members do not help each other during the programme. During the programme, we encountered some technical problems. As an example, the catering could not come to send our lunch during the break time, therefore, by using the critical thinking and problem-solving skills, I suggested to the Programme Exco to continue with some relaxing slot, which was team-building and icebreaking session with the students, in order to make sure that we would have something beneficial to be done while waiting for the catering to come. As for me, it also could prevent the event from being dragged until late evening as some of the students came from outside of Kuala Lumpur and it would be an inconvenience for them if we dragged their time. The ice-breaking session while waiting for lunch. In a nutshell, I have gained lots of new knowledge throughout this programme. Personally I think that this programme was also indeed a good medium for me to sharpen my soft skills in managing the problems faced. I learnt on how I have to take a risk and face the challenges in order to grow and be better. I also learnt that when I am lack in some knowledge, I have to strive to learn, instead of giving some excuses to avoid from the responsibility given. Throughout this, I have make a full use of my critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to fulfill my responsibility as an AJK TTK and also as a board member of the World Radiography Day 2014 organization. Critical thinking skill helps me to enhance my hidden talent such as designing a T-shirt which I never in my life I imagined myself doing it, while the problem solving skill has helped me a lot in solving quite a number of problems that I encounter since the first day I enter this programme and become a part of the organization.
