Miss Havercroft’s Class
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Over the coming term we will be studying a unit of work entitled ‘Britain since 1930’. During this unit we will be
working on the following things:
In Science, we’ll be:

Associating the brightness of a lamp or volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used

Comparing and giving reasons for variation in components’ function, including the brightness of bulbs,
the loudness of buzzers and on/off position of switches

Using recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit diagram
In Geography, we’ll be:

Locating countries involved in the Second World War
In Technology, we’ll be:

Making an Anderson Shelter using a range of different materials
In History, we’ll be learning about:

The 1930’s depression in England - ‘Jarrow Crusade’ and comparing this to the closing of ‘Scunthorpe
Steel Works’










The causes of the Second World War
The evacuation and the effects of this on the lives of evacuees
The Blitz/Air Raids – bombings and the role of the ARP warden
The Battle of Britain
Influential figures - Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler
The Home Front
Rationing Food
The bombing of Pearl Harbour
The story of Anne Frank
Concentration Camps
In Physical Education, we’ll be:

Understanding what the children are capable of achieving with their bodies by gaining a baseline level of
fitness

Improving speed, stamina and coordination by carrying out a range of fitness activities

Investigating whether practise improves performance

Learning how to pass a ball with control

Learning how to use different passes in a game of Benchball

Learning how to defend and attack in a game of Benchball
P.E will be on Mondays (indoor) and Thursdays (outdoor – weather permitting) – please could you ensure your
child has the correct kit with them.
In Computing, we’ll be:
Applying basic ICT skills
Learning how to develop an interactive game


In Music, we’ll be learning:
War Time Songs

In R.E, we’ll be finding out:

About codes of conduct and rites of passage in the lives of faith members

About the impact of religious codes of conduct on believers of different faiths
In Maths, we’ll be working on the following areas:










Multiplying numbers up to 4 digits by 1 and 2 digit numbers
Multiplying and dividing whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000
Solving problems involving multiplication and division, including using their knowledge of factors and
multiples, squares and cubes
Dividing numbers up to 4 digits by a 1 digit number using short division
Recognising and using square numbers and cube numbers
Solving problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a combination of these,
including understanding the meaning of the equals sign
Comparing and ordering fractions whose denominators are multiples of the same number
Identifying, naming and writing equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including
tenths and hundredths
Reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers with up to three decimal places
Reading and writing decimal numbers as fractions
In English, we’ll be working on the following areas:

Identifying the features of persuasive texts with a focus on writing a letter to persuade

Creating Propaganda Posters

Writing diary entries

Grammar skills
We already know the interest you take in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work
they have done as the term progresses and let them teach you!
