Press Release – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Pam Herdrich, Executive Coordinator NARC&DC and ICC Work to Reduce Wildland/Urban Fire Risks IDAHO FALLS — SEPTEMBER 10TH & 11TH — The HIGH COUNTRY RC&D is combining forces with the National Association of Resource Conservation & Development Councils (NARC&DC), and the International Code Council (ICC) to combat wild fires in the Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI). The two national organizations, working with HIGH COUNTRY RC&D, local, state and regional officials to give communities located in and among the edges of Idaho’s Wildlands the tools needed to save lives and property from wildfires. The effort, funded through a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fire Prevention and Safety Grant, aims to establish training and workshops that help reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfire through the Wildfire Safe, Sound & Code Smart program. A two-day, Wildfire Safe, Sound & Code Smart workshop will be held on September 10-11, 2013 at the Hotel on the Falls in Idaho Falls, ID. Major speakers from the Washington D.C. based ICC are Kraig Stevenson, Senior Regional Manager for ICC Government Relations and Dan W. Bailey, Executive Director of ICC Wildland Fire, Natural Resource, Environmental and Natural Hazard Programs. They will provide information that seeks to improve a community’s ability to combat Wildland fire through development of fire prevention tools and building codes that better fit the changing human habitation along the edge of the Idaho’s Wildlands. The WUI code adoption process includes planning, designing, building and retrofitting homes, as well as properly maintaining them and the surrounding property, which will help further protect entire communities from wildfire. The program will actively involve RC&D, and other, community leaders in the WUI code development, adoption and education process. HIGH COUNTRY RC&D NARC&DC and the ICC will work to increase awareness and prevention efforts among homeowners and businesses at increased risk of WUI fires.
