PLUME COLLEGE YEAR 11 INTO YEAR 12 SUMMER TRANSITION CHALLENGE 2015 Subject: Travel and Tourism Qualification/Level: AS Linear or Modular A level? Examination Board OCR Modular - In a modular A level, AS examinations at the end of Year 12 are worth 50% of the A level. - For AS Travel and Tourism the examination at the end of Year 12 is worth 33.3% and the remaining marks are taken from 2 pieces of coursework which are equally weighted. We expect students joining the Plume College to complete a transition piece of work for each subject between the end of Key Stage 4 and the start of Key Stage 5. This is assessed and feedback given to students when they start the courses in September. The following challenge(s) are to be completed over the summer break and brought to your first lesson. The Summer Transition ‘CHALLENGE’ You are working at Maldon Tourist Information Centre and a gentleman has contacted you asking for advice on a future 3 night visit to the Maldon area during July/August time. The gentleman has made you aware he will be driving to Maldon from Oxford and is travelling with his wife. The couple are both in their 50s. This trip is a holiday for the couple. The couple plan to eat out for the duration of their trip and they enjoy a variety of foods, they are flexible on where they stay as they have their car and have no particular budget in mind. Whilst visiting the area the gentleman would like the opportunity to play golf and the lady to have some beauty treatments. They are keen to visit a variety of attractions and places within the Maldon District, they would like to know about any special events and anything else that might be interesting for them to do in the area. You are required to produce an itinerary (day by day plan) that covers their entire stay in Maldon. The plan should include: Where the couple will stay A restaurant for each evening and suggestions for lighter meals during the day Places to visit throughout their trip (please note their specific requests) Timings, which includes time for travelling as well as how long you suggest they spend in the places they are visiting / eating At the end of the itinerary produce a list of the resources you used. For example: name of the leaflet or map (Guide to Maldon 2015), name of the website (www.maldon.gov.uk), name of the staff member you spoke to about Maldon in the Tourist Information Centre (Mrs ………..Maldon T.I.C.) Please note that this couple have never been to Maldon before and therefore just naming places or restaurants without any further information will not be sufficient. As part of this task you must provide the couple with a range of leaflets / maps / brochures which you will collect from Maldon Tourist Information Centre. As part of this visit you are required to identify yourself to a member of staff as studying Travel and Tourism at Plume School. The member of staff will provide you with something that will be evidence as part of this work that you actually visited the centre. How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification as a whole. The examined unit requires students to understand the services provided by a Tourist Information Centre and how destinations appeal to different types of customers. Maldon is a relevant example to use in the exam. The criterion for assessment has been based on the OCR specifications for A Level Travel and Tourism coursework. This includes the correct use of spelling, punctuation and grammar and the level of detail differentiated between each mark band. How the work should be presented. Where possible work should be word processed (but can be hand written) and produced as an itinerary. An itinerary is a day by day guide, which includes timings of your suggestions for visiting Maldon. Length of time expected to complete the challenge:20 minutes to visit Maldon Tourist Information Centre (you may also wish to spend a further 30 minutes on the internet conducting additional research) Up to 3 hours to produce a written itinerary How the work will be assessed and marked:Mark Band 3 (11-15 marks equivalent to an A or B grade) – a range of resources have been used (at least 4-5) and evidence has been provided of this, there are only occasional errors of grammar, spelling and punctuation, itinerary will cover all the criteria requested by customer in detail and there will be justifications of why that itinerary was chosen. Mark Band 2 (6-10 marks equivalent to a C or D grade) – some resources have been used (at least 2-3) and evidence has been provided of this, there are some noticeable errors of grammar, spelling and punctuation, itinerary will cover most of the criteria requested by the customer or may cover all the criteria but may at times be limited in detail. Mark Band 1 (1-5 marks equivalent to an E /U grade) – limited resources and / or lack of evidence of resources, errors of grammar and punctuation will be noticeable, itinerary is limited as choices are not suitable for customer and/or lack detail. Plagiarism (copying work directly from source and / or failing to reference) is a serious offence and will not be tolerated by the Faculty. Work must be written using your OWN words. Success criteria for this challenge:Evidence of visit to Tourist Information Centre How closely your chosen itinerary matches the customer needs and the level of detail in the itinerary Range of resources used to produce itinerary (please note the internet only counts as ONE resource irrespective of how many websites you use) Accurate use of grammar, spelling and punctuality Resources to be used for this work Leaflets, maps and brochures which you will collect from Maldon Tourist Information Centre Who to contact if you should require further assistance with the work before the end of term? Miss Lewis – r.lewis@plume.essex.sch.uk What equipment will be needed for the subject? Work can be typed (preferably) or handwritten but no specific equipment needed Extension To achieve the top of Mark Band 3 you will need to justify (give reasons) why you made the choices on the itinerary for the couple. To understand more about this subject at a high level:Take a look at some of these websites – www.travelmole.com www.ttgdigital.co.uk www.bbc.co.uk/news www.theguardian.com/uk In other words, visit websites that will give you up to date knowledge on current affairs Look at Travel programmes and read some guidebooks on destinations in the UK and abroad Visits/ Galleries/ Museums/ places to see relevant to the course – You must visit Maldon Tourist Information Centre (just off the High Street)to complete this work If you are going on holiday this Summer (or have ever been on holidays) think about the places you visit and why they appeal to different types of people.
