Dear Friend
Thank you for your continuing role in the work of Global Philanthropy
Alliance. We reached a new high at the June meeting of our Africa
Advisory Board in Nairobi, Kenya. We had a chance to witness our
accomplishments and build from these toward an even more
successful future. For the first time, we invited Kenyan youth
grantees to participate in a learning session. Grantees traveled from
many regions of Kenya to share their experiences, network with other
grantees, and teach our GPA team their thoughts on best practices,
entrepreneurship, emerging trends and new methods to evaluate
outcomes. This session set the productive and energetic tone for the
balance of our meetings!

The
hallmark of GPA is our ability to make effective grants. The GPA
Board listens to our grantees and Africa Advisory Board
members, and links grantees to resources. GPA knows we don’t
have the answers, we don’t know what is best for our
grantees; we must listen to them.
th
On June 8 9 groups of
grantees (including youth)
together with board, staff and
distinguished guests gathered
for a day-long learning
session. Presentations were
made by second-grant
recipients Joshua Arusei
(AGLOW) and Khalif Abjata
(Kenya PastoralistJournalist
Network) sharing information Grantee, Paul Maina of CYEC with 8 first grant
recipients from Kenya and our Africa Advisory Board. Together, we
learned about the rich diversity of grant making, new criteria for
outcome evaluation and to always remember to think outside the box
when GPA evaluates grants for funding. Our grantees learned that
GPA is not only provides funding but support! Most importantly, our
grantees from all regions of Kenya now have a network of support to
rely on each other. We feel this is precisely what makes GPA
different, successful and worthy of your support.
Grantee Update
GPA was overwhelmed with grant requests during our last grant
cycle! 39 grants were submitted and decision making was
challenging. GPA funded four first-time grants (of $5000 each)
including a brick-making business training 50 Kenyan youth to make
and market bricks, a skill building program for 12 former sex workers
in Nigeria, and a youth agribusiness initiative serving over 300. The
Africa Board also recommended 4 second grants ($10,000 each)
that GPA anticipates funding this summer.

And, changes lives
Did you know that every dollar contributed to GPA
by you is reserved for our grantees. All overhead and
administrative expenses are supported by our Board. Your
contribution directly funds youth-led or youth-engaged
organizations that unleash the power of youth to advance
the economic and social health of their families and com
munities.
Youth from GPA Grantee Aglow nurturing Passion Fruit plants which they will
sell both locally and abroad
The Rift Valley Region of Kenya suffered from unemployment and a
culture of violence according to GPA Grantee and AGLOW Founder
Joshua Arusei. While the land was fertile, many residents were not
taking advantage of their natural resource. AGLOW received first
level funding from GPA in 2009 with the goals of reducing regional
poverty, improving access to income generating activities,
increasing business knowledge and skills and improving access to
produce markets. AGLOW used GPA funding to provide training to
24 youth in business and agricultural skills. Youth organized into
groups to access additional government funding and microfinance
opportunities. Income generation from farming provided income
necessary for families to start additional enterprises, particularly by
women in the family. Finally, AGLOW assisted youth in creating
cooperatives to provide stronger, efficient marketing and distribution
channels. The cooperative also served as to provide members with
profit sharing and to sustain the organization. AGLOW applied for
nd
and received 2
level GPA funding in 2010 ($10,000). This funding
was used to increase training capacity, form additional youth groups,
support business and expand the model created by the first grant.
To date, over 2300 youth have been trained; unemployment,
poverty and addiction have been significantly reduced in the region;
living standards have improved dramatically and lives have changed
We are very excited about the amazing work our African partners –
both our grantees and our African Advisory Board -- are doing on
the ground. They have shown that youth, when given the right
opportunities and training, can make a lasting difference in their
community. I hope you will continue to support the work of GPA and
our partners in Africa. Please contact us if you have questions or
additional ideas about what we could be doing.
Sincerely,
Anne Petersen
