Apone 1 Gina Apone Professor Hart-Davidson Wra 210 Intro to Web Authoring Module 1 1.) What problems was hypertext proposed to solve? Hypertext was proposed to solve the issue regarding having access and control over information and in CERN’s case, keeping track of or handling large projects. Hypertext involves using linked systems as opposed to systems that are hierarchical such as “trees” or the method of using keywords. Hypertext allows you to link information in any way and to grant access to that information to many people which makes it easier to monitor projects and extend information more easily and efficiently. 2.) Where will your websites (once you make them) live? Our websites will live in/on my server’s hard-drive that is connected to the internet. 3.) Who is your ISP at MSU? The ISP or Internet Service Provider at MSU is msu.edu. Bing: 1.) Can you explain the difference in the number of search results between 2a and 2b? When searching bing for learning to make web pages, I got 126,000,000 results. When I searched bing for the same thing with quotations, I only got 12,000 results. This could be due to the fact that the search engine has more people typing sentences or words similar to this without the quotation marks and has more pages in its index that it finds relevant to those words being searched for. 2.) Can you explain the difference in the content of search results between search 2a and 2b? The first search gave me results that seemed to be more accurate and relevant to what I was searching for and gave me links to sites that would be helpful in learning to build a web page unlike the second search with quotations, however, which gave me a wider, more random assortment of results. The content of the results from searches 2a and 2b may be different because typing in and searching for learning to make web pages is more common than searching for “learning to make web pages.” The quotations might cause the search engine to pull more random results from its index because it is being thrown off by the quotations in the second search. Google: 1.) What is the difference between a search engine and a directory? A search engine actively brings you results whether or not it is a crawlerbased search engine or a hybrid search engine. Search engines like Google, for example, use “spiders” that search the web to build directories. They also adapt or change listing by picking up on changes made to web pages. Directories depend on people/humans for listings and information and search results are retrieved based on matching words of the descriptions given. Unlike search engines, directories also do not change listings based on changes made to web pages. When it comes to making changes to your web pages and enhancing your listing, search engines and directories are not related.
