Essential Questions: What are the appropriate behaviors of a successful library
student?
Lesson activity: Students will listen to the book The Wonderful Thing About
Hiccups. After reading the book we will discuss the correct library behaviors with
books. Students will create a picture depicting one of the rules of the library.

picture depicting one of the rules of the library.
First Grade
Essential Questions: How are library books organized? What are the correct
procedures for checking in a book? What are the correct procedures for
checking out a book?
Lesson activity: Introduce call numbers to students, i.e. Why are they used?
What do they represent? How are they used? Review proper shelving
techniques (i.e. spines out, correct shelf, book straight, etc.) and supervise
student shelving. Read Read It, Don’t Eat It.
Second Grade
Essential Questions: How are library books organized? What are the correct
procedures for checking in a book? What are the correct procedures for
checking out a book?
Lesson activity: Introduce students to the fiction section. Discuss the relevance of
the call number. Walk with students through the section, pointing to possible
“right fit” books. Booktalk or read the first chapter of several books. Encourage
students to select a fiction book.
Third Grade
Essential Questions: How are library books organized? What are the correct
procedures for checking in a book? What are the correct procedures for
checking out a book?
Lesson activity: Read Bob the Alien Discovers the Dewey Decimal System.
Review the DDS; it’s purpose and use. Allow students to complete the questions
about their favorite dewey section.
Fourth Grade
Essential Questions: What is the definition of genre? What are examples of
genre? What is a fairy tale? What is a fractured fairy tale?
Lesson activity: Discuss the term genre. Identify examples of genre. Brainstorm a
definition of a fairy tale. Read one of the fracture fairy tales.
Fifth Grade
Essential Questions: How is the Hutchinson library organized? What are the main
areas of the library?
Lesson activity: Brainstorm the main areas of the library. Using these areas,
students should begin creating a map of our library.
