Course Description
This course is recommended for RNs
desiring to take the Progressive Care
Certified Nurse (PCCN) examination offered
by the American Association of Critical Care
Nurses. The review covers a broad range of
nursing practice principles based on the
Synergy Model. Test-Taking Strategies are
emphasized throughout the course.
Karen Carroll RN CCNS PCCN CCRN has
practiced as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the last 20 years in both critical and
progressive care units. Ms. Carroll’s graduate and undergraduate degrees are from San
Diego State University (SDSU). In addition to practicing as a CNS she teaches and
precepts graduate students for SDSU. Ms. Carroll’s clinical expertise is in pain
management, hemodynamics, cardiac, pulmonary, and ECG analysis. She has
published on a variety of topics including, pain in the critically ill and heart failure. She
frequently presents locally and nationally on a variety of topics related to the care of
the acute and critically ill. She has the ability to present advanced concepts in an easy
to understand manner. Ms. Carroll is an enthusiastic educator who uses current clinical
experiences to emphasize important course content.
Course Objectives
Course Study Guide
Participants will:
1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills
necessary to successfully complete
the PCCN exam.
2. Describe appropriate nursing
interventions for common clinical
problems encountered in a
progressive care unit (PCU).
3. Analyze and answer practice test
questions related to all body systems.
4. Describe patient assessment
findings and evaluate treatment goals
for patients commonly cared for in a
PCU.
5. Utilize the synergy model in
optimizing patient outcomes.
6. Practice test-taking strategies by
using the provided study guide.
Each participant receives a comprehensive
study guide designed to enhance memory
and learning with numerous practice
questions provided. This study guide is a
review of the material presented in the
class.
