All about Archaeologists Do you know what an archaeologist does? They study how ancient people lived, the tools they used, and the homes they lived in. The word, archeology comes from the greek language and means the study of what is ancient. They solve the puzzles of how our ancestors lived and worked. Archaeologists study land and determine where people may have lived hundreds and even thousands of years ago. They go on “digs” or excavations, where they neatly move earth to uncover bones, ancient homes, tools, cooking utensils, and garbage to name a few things. These things that are dug up are called artifacts.” By carefully examining what they discover, they can tell how long ago the people lived and how they lived. Two of the most famous archaeology digs are King Tutankhamun’s Tomb in Egypt and Stonehenge in England. “King Tut” was discovered in 1922. His mummy and all the treasure buried with him were found intact or in good condition. Stonehenge is made of very large stones arranged in a circle. They have been there for thousands of years and no one knows who put them there. If this type of work sounds interesting, you will need to attend college and receive a four year degree. Many archaeologists study many more years and get their doctorate degree to become experts in how ancient people live.
