LESSON PLAN ROWAN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND EXERCISE SCIENCE HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION Teacher: Kellilynn Clifford & Tyler Bayley Unit Title: Tennis Serve Lesson #1 of 4 Duration of class: 40 minutes Number of students: 24 Grade level: 4th SECTION A. (Overview) Rationale (importance of lesson): To properly play tennis students need to know the necessary skills to be able to play. Serving is needed to learn because it is what starts games and is used frequently throughout the game. Anticipated difficulties and how they will be addressed: Some students won’t be able to make contact or hit a regular tennis ball- use a playground ball or a ball of a larger size Some students won’t know where the serve should go or where is best- use cones to indicate where to go Resources, Equipment and Materials: Tennis balls Tennis Rackets Poly Spots or Cones Larger playground balls SECTION B. (Objectives, CPIs & Assessment) Lesson Objective (CPI) Psychomotor: Will be able to serve in tennis with proper skill cues. Cognitive: Will be able to identify a proper serve Affective: Will demonstrate if they enjoyed the lesson by a thumb up or down and also being able to see smiles on their faces or wanting to stay after longer to keep playing. CPI# 2.5.4.A.1 2.5.4.A.2 Student Assessment Teacher observation 2.5.4.A.1 Closure questions 2.5.4.A.1 Closure questions SECTION C. (Learning Activities & Instructional Strategies*) Time Line: Lesson Content, Procedures (management, transitions), & Instructional Strategies – Include introductory activities, learning focus activities, culminating activity & closure 8 Introductory Activities: Minutes Review day before lesson Have students sit at center court on the line or designate another spot if in a different location Ask students if they have ever played tennis or did a tennis serve before or do they know what it is or how it is done Inform students they will be in squads/teams and each person will need to get a tennis racket and one tennis ball for their team. They will go to their section of the tennis court and wait for more directions. Stretch/Warmup 10 Minutes Learning Focus Activities: Inform students they will be learning how to perform a tennis serve. Explain and demonstrate the serving cues: o Eyes on contact point of ball on the racket o Knees slightly bent o Stand sideways o Bring Racket back o Toss Ball o Follow through Protocol Teacher: o 3 views from the side correct form of a tennis serve o 3 views from facing forward correct form of a tennis serve Protocol Student: o 5x’s eyes closed imagining yourself slow-mo o 5x’s eyes closed imagining yourself moderate motion o 5x’s eyes open in slow-mo o 5x’s eyes open in moderate motion Students will get into lines and walk up and down the court will keeping their eye on the tennis ball as it balances on their rackets. Students will get into lines and jog up and down the court will keeping their eye on the tennis ball as it balances on their rackets. Students will walk up and down the court while bouncing the ball on the tennis racket in front of them. Keeping their eyes on it the whole time. Students will jog up and down the court while bouncing the ball on the tennis racket in front of them. Keeping their eyes on it the whole time. Biomechanics: Athletic stance with feet shoulder with apart, eyes on the ball and its point of contact, keeping weight balanced as you bring your arm back to swing, shoulder rotation, follow through the full swing. 20 Culminating Activity: Minutes Bombers: o On the opposite side of the court have targets with in the serving box that the students are trying to learn where it is but also to learn their accuracy at hitting the tennis ball over there. o Instead of them trying to send a serve as fast as possible this is more of a lob activity so that they can grasp the proper form and to be able to keep their eye on the ball the whole time. o Whoever can get it in or closest to the target gets a point. 2 Minutes Hot Potato: o Teams of 2 or 4 depending on class size o Teams on either side of the court o Practice serving properly to the opposite side of the court and the other side is supposed to return the ball without letting it hit the ground or keeping it to long o The team who can make it over twice without dropping it scores a point Reflection/Closure: Ask students what are the cues for tennis serve? Ask students by showing a thumb up or down if they enjoyed the lesson and learned anything more then what they knew? Ask students if they liked activities game and what would they change? Make sure the biomechanics were covered and that they know them Biomechanics: Athletic stance with feet shoulder with apart, eyes on the ball and its point of contact, keeping weight balanced as you bring your arm back to swing, shoulder rotation, follow through the full swing. SECTION D. (Reflection) Student Outcomes: Describe degree to which students met each objective: Teacher Effectiveness: What went well? What needs work? How would you modify the lesson?
