Dr Schoonees is a professional engineer with over 35 years of experience in coastal and port engineering. He has worked
extensively on coastal, port and hydraulic engineering projects including beach stability studies (beach nourishment and
erosion setback lines), breakwaters and marine outfalls, temporary and permanent shore protection, sedimentation at
harbours (channel infill rates), dredging and sand bypassing (sand trap design), mathematical and physical modelling,
development and application of sediment transport measuring techniques, coastal recreational facilities (beach
improvement schemes, beach evaluation and tidal pools), aeolian sediment transport (effects, rates, dune design and
solutions), hydraulic structures and scour, harbours and marinas, specialist studies for environmental impact assessments,
coastal zone management, cohesive sediment transport, and transport and dispersion of plumes.
