Note Guide: Spanish Nouns
Género, Número y Artículos: Gender, Number & Articles
I. Género (Gender):
In Spanish, all nouns carry _________________, either ____________________ (M) or
_____________________ (F).
In order to tell whether a noun is M or F look at the _____________________ for a clue.
*Except for some irregular exceptions, the ending will automatically distinguish the
noun as M or F.
Maculino (Masculine):
Words that end in following letters or letter groups are generally masculino (M):
** Be careful, this is only a general guideline…there are words do not follow this
rule!
Femenina (Feminine):
Words that end in following letters or letter groups are generally femenina (F).
**Be careful, remember –pa & -ma!
** Remember, these are general guidelines. There are some exceptions that
do not follow these patterns!!!
Ejemplos: Are the following masculine or femenina?
1. universidad
2. biblioteca
3. colegio
4. Programa
II. Número (Number):
Number refers to whether a noun is ______________________ or _________________________.
You make a noun plural by adding an –______ or –______ to the end of the noun.
In some cases, other orthographic changes may be necessary.
To make nouns plural, do the following:
A. If the word ends in a _____________________, simply add “-s” to make it plural
Ex: cuaderno  cuadernos
B. If the word ends in a ________________________, add “-es”
Ex: universidad  universidades
C. If the word ends in “–z”, the plural changes to “-________”
Ex: lápiz  lápices
D. If the word ends in “–ión”, add “-es” and remove the written _____________ mark.
Ex: lección  lecciones
