Illiad Chapter 7 and 8 Notes

Chapter 7

Heroic Code: Odysseus and Diomedes take a symbol of victory when they kill Dolon, Hector’s spy.

1.

Agamemnon was worried about the war

2.

Menelaus was also worried and made a plan to spy on the Trojans as they were camping on the battlefield

3.

Diomedes and Odysseus are sent to spy on the Trojans

4.

Hector also wanted to spy on the Greeks and sent Dolon to spy on them

5.

Diomedes and Odysseus end up seeing Dolon on the beach

6.

They capture him and make him give them information about the Trojans

7.

Dolon tells them that Hector promised to give Achillies’s best horses to the spy that brought back information on the Greeks.

8.

Odysseus and Diomedes cut off Dolan’s head and snuck into the camp of King Rhesus killed them all and stole their horses

9.

They get back to the Greek camp and then sacrificed to Athena to thank her for her support

Chapter 8

Divine intervention: Zeus makes it rain red to deter the Greeks

The Greeks still celebrated the victory of King Rhesus’s horses even though it was raining red.

Agamemnon leads a charge and a lot people died

Agamemnon gets injured and has to go back to the ships

Hector battles Odysseus and Diomedes

Paris shoots an arrow at Diomedes and pins him to the ground

Odysseus is the last Greek warrior standing on the battlefield- he is hit by a spear and calls for help

Ajax replaces Odysseus on the battlefield- Odysseus goes back to the ship to get healed

Machaon ( a healer) gets hit by Paris and Hector- Machaon goes back to the ship to get healed

Achillies is watching from a far on his ship

Achillies sends Patrolocus to find out if the healer is dead or alive

Patrolocus talks to Nestor- he says- you should dress like Achilles -you are the same size as him and you can fit in his armor- The Trojans will never know it’s not Achilles and they will be afraid.

Chapter 9 Notes

Begins with more fighting – Trojans and Greeks throwing rocks and spears

Divine Intervention- Zeus tries to stop the Trojans- drops a red snake on Trojans

Sarpedon ( a half mortal son of Zeus) and Glaucus lead the Trojan allies to break a hole in the wall around the Greek camp.

Heroic Code- Hector performs a feat of strength

Divine intervention- Zeus helps Hector perform a feat of strength

Trojans rush to defeat the Greek army and try to defeat them

Divine Intervention- Poseidon gives the Greeks new energy to fight

Heroic Code: Ajax throws a huge rock and causes a severe injury to Hector- This is the low point for Hector.

Divine Intervention- Zeus asks Apollo to heal Hector

Heroic Code: - Hector is now resurrected

Hector leads a charge to drive through the Greek shield of men and orders that the Greek ships be burned

Ajax ( Greek) continues to try and get the Greeks to defend themselves against the Trojans.

Chapter 10 Notes

Achilles decides to give Patrolcus his armor in the hopes the Trojans would back down from fighting.

Heroic Code: Achilles- refuses the call

Patrolcus leads the Myrmidons to fight the Trojans and when they see what they think is

“ Achilles” they are afraid. Patrolcus and Myrmidons are Achilles’ followers

Achilles gives a sacrifice to Zeus and asks him to protect Patrolcus, but he only grants part of his request.

Divine intervention- Zeus gives Patroclus success in fighting but doesn’t stop him going too far

Heroic Code: Patrolcus takes Sarpedon’s armor as a trophy

Divine Intervention- Zeus makes Patroclus forget his promise to Achilles

Patroclus fights Hector

Divine intervention- Apollo knocks off Patroclus’s helmet

Hector kills Patrolcus

Heroic Code: Greeks and Trojans fight over – they each want it for a trophy- Hector takes

Achilles armor

Greeks end up taking Patrolcus’ body and giving him a proper burial

Divine Intervention- Zeus makes the Greeks snap out of their depression
