Teaching Opportunity at the Stanley British Primary School Opening: Special Education Teacher To begin October, 2015 About Stanley BPS: For over 40 years, Stanley classrooms have been filled with engaged learners guided by inspired teachers. Responsibilities: The Special Education Teacher’s responsibility is to support a sixth grade child with special needs in her academic and social emotional development. Specific areas of responsibility include the following: Learning Support Plan o Given the child’s strengths, preferences and needs, assess and update her specific learning goals for the Learning Support Plan with the input and collaboration of parents and middle school teachers. o Ensure the child’s Learning Support Plans are written, updated and filed by deadlines and that support plan process is upheld throughout the year. o Provide assessment outcome data for the Learning Support Plan goals that is provided every 5 to 7 weeks to the student’s parents and support team. Curriculum Accommodations & Modifications o Work with subject-area teachers regulalry to gather materials and provide the child’s parents with curriculum and homework that is accommodated and/or modified one week prior to the presentation of the curriculum at school. o Design curricula, materials, reinforcing modified homework, learning environment and teaching strategies from core curriculum to meet the child’s learning needs making accommodations and modifications. o Work with the child individually or in small groups during 3-5 periods a week to help ensure consolidation of learning and to allocate time to homework. o Ensure progress monitoring is occurring and keep track of data to monitor the child’s progress and provide progress summaries every 5 – 7 weeks. o Use data to inform instruction. In the Classroom/In the School o Serve as a learning facilitator in some classes, attending classes with the student to assist with participation and comprehension. As appropriate, identify opportunities for the student to attend and participate in other classes independently. o Work collaboratively with sixth grade subject-area teachers so they may be equally responsible for the child’s in-class work and performance- model for classroom teachers how to meet the child’s learning needs and make necessary accommodations and modifications as needed. o Facilitate peer-to-peer relationships that help the child but also increase her confidence to succeed more independently. o Create a Learning Plan Matrix (with daily schedule) to ensure that the child is working towards her goals. o Create all necessary visuals, including a weekly schedule to empower the child to independently move through each day, meeting her learning and developmental needs. Communication and Meetings o Coordinate daily communications (google docs) with classroom teachers, parents, and other designated personnel. o Participate in trans-disciplinary Child Support Meetings (speech, O.T, tutors, Psychologist Consultant, classroom teacher, Head of Middle School and others, etc.) at least three times a year. Transitions o Work with subject-area teachers to provide a summer program for the child whereby (a) she maintains knowledge learned during the school year and (b) she can prepare for the first few weeks of the new school year with materials that are appropriately accommodated and modified. o Provide summer tutoring as agreed upon. General Stanley BPS staff responsibilities: o Actively engage in ongoing professional development. o Constructively participate on self-evaluation and lesson plan observation process. o Attend appropriate middle school and all-school staff meetings. o Attend August retreat and staff meeting days in January, April, June, and any other required full staff events. o Participate actively in school events and activities. o Communicate and collaborate positively and professionally with the Stanley staff and community. Required Attributes: o Communicate and collaborate positively and professionally with the Stanley staff and community o Successful experience and ability in accommodating and modifying curriculum both independently and with co-teachers resulting in a student acquiring the subject at an appropriate level o Successful experience and ability to create, update and assess an Education Learning Plan o Ability to apply standardized testing to a student who is “differentlyabled” on a regular basis and with accommodations and modifications if appropriate in order to utilize such tests to appropriately set goals and modify curriculum o Experience teaching students who are differently-abled o High ethical standards, excellent work ethic and positive disposition o Ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural and diverse populations o Excellent ability to multi-task, attention to detail and follow-through o Bachelors Degree in Education or equivalent, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience o Demonstrates – Lifelong learning Joyfulness Positive and constructive communication Creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness An understanding of children and childhood Commitment to making a positive difference in the world Preferred Attributes: A.
