Educated at Cambridge, Durham, and Edinburgh Universities, Jolyon Mitchell worked as a producer and journalist for BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4 before he was appointed to the University of Edinburgh. As Director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues he directs a number of research projects and helps to host a wide range of public lectures and events. He has supervised over a dozen doctorates and supervised well over 100 other postgraduates. Many of these completed doctorates have been published as books or articles. His former students now work in a wide range of countries including: Ghana, Nigeria, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Germany, Canada, the USA and the UK. Dr Mitchell is a regular broadcaster and he has given numerous invited lectures around the world including at the Gregorian University in Rome, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of the Philippines, the University of Sydney, the University of Tehran, the Theology Faculty at Butare, Rwanda and the Vrije University in Amsterdam as well as all over the UK, Ireland and different parts of North America. Projects and interests Dr Mitchell is author and editor of a number of books and numerous chapters & articles. His publications reflect some of his research interests and include: Media Violence and Christian Ethics (Cambridge University Press, 2007); The Religion and Film Reader (co-editor with S. Brent Plate Routledge, 2007); Mediating Religion: Conversations in Media, Religion and Culture (co-editor with Sophia Marriage, Continuum, 2003); and Visually Speaking (T&T Clark, 1999). He is currently completing Promoting Peace, Inciting Violence (Routledge, 2011). Dr Mitchell is also co-editor of three research monograph series with Routledge, including on Media, Religion and Culture; and on Film and Religion. Dr Mitchell is a life member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, a member of the national AHRC Peer Review College and acted as the only British Member of the International Study Commission on Media, Religion & Culture, which consisted of 12 other scholars from nations including: Colombia, Mexico, Germany, Italy, USA and Australia. He has worked as a visiting Professor at Dartmouth College (USA), a visiting Fellow at CARTS (Centre for Advanced Religious and Theological Study at the University of Cambridge), and a visiting Fellow at Ormond Hall, the University of Melbourne. He was director of the Third International Conference on Media, Religion and Culture, Edinburgh, July 1999 and director of the Fourth International Conference on Peacemaking in the World of Film: from Conflict to Reconciliation, Edinburgh, July 2007. He has carried out original research in a wide range of countries around Europe and beyond including: Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana, and the Philippines.
