Focused on reviewed order of operations and working with fractions and multiple brackets. Played lots of games to reinforce positive and negative integers Studied absolute value and combine with order of operations including fractions Common Core Standards Met: Language Arts (reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, listening and speaking Melanie completed the following activities to demonstrate the following skills to proficiency. She uses literature books-- both fiction and non-fiction, printed WS, grade level spelling word lists and teacher created activities, and learning games and small group instruction to practice Language Arts skills. Oral assessments, tests, writing, and WS were used to assess understanding. Common Core Standards Met: Social Studies (geography, history, civic values, government) Melanie completed the following activities to demonstrate the listed skills to proficiency. Melanie uses the Story of the World: Volume 3 Early Modern History and a variety of hands-on and online resources as well as small group instruction to practice. WB pages, Hands-on Activities and Games, and Oral Assessments were used to test understanding. She also learned about states and capitals and other countries through Cooking Melanie completed the following concepts in Social Studies: Studied the Revolutionary War, Paul Revere's Ride and the Constitution as well as the Pledge of Allegiance and history of our flag Read from the Strange Museum historical fiction series - The Midnight Ride Discussed the Midnight ride of Paul Revere Read the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow about it Completed a worksheet Looked at the Constitution, discussed the Preamble and its meaning Discussed how the principles of Roman government helped in the creation of our Constitution Discussed the branches of government and how representation work in Congress based on the Constitution and made a schematic of the branches of government Introduced Thomas Jefferson and looked at a picture of his house he designed, called Monticello We all had a Thanksgiving Potluck together Studied the legend of Betsy Ross and practiced to fold a flag with a towel Recited the Pledge of Allegiance Played Made to Trade - paying for items with shillings and traveling around the colonial town Played review Bingo California Content Standards Met: Science (investigation, experimentation, scientific facts, concepts and theories) Melanie demonstrated the following skills to proficiency using the listed activities. Melanie uses small group instruction and hands-on activities to learn concepts in science. Oral Assessments, WB pages, and Lab Experiments were used to assess proficiency. Watched several Khan Academy videos In History of Science of Early Modern Times class: Learn about the fundamental principle of aerodynamics - Bernoulli's Principle, and the story of scientist/mathematician Daniel Bernoulli, and the Bernoulli family history. - Students performed an experiment with a ping pong ball suspended in the air by a hairdryer demonstrating lift and suction (low pressure of moving fluids). - Students performed an experiment with a piece of paper, blowing across the top to create low pressure, and the paper lifts into the moving air above. - Students learned about the story of Daniel Bernoulli, and his father and family history of mathematicians. - Students learned about Bernoulli's Principle, both the layman's definition, and the scientific definition, as given by Bernoulli. - Students learned about how Bernoulli's Principle makes airplanes and helicopter wings/blades actually work, and how Newton's laws also play a part. - Students learned the definition of an aerodynamic stall - Students created highly creative designs for paper airplanes, and had a competition of flight distance in the halls of LBTB. Learn about the character, inventions, and experiments of Benjamin Franklin. Through this, learn about the nature of static electricity and lightning. - Students learned about the history of static electricity as a sort of magic act - Students learned about the Dutch invention the Leyden Jar - Students learned of its practical uses and function to store electric charge. - Students learned the history of Benjamin Franklin in the USA, and of his character. - Students discussed the lightning rod, kite, key and Leyden Jar experiment, and what it truly discovered. - Students performed an experiment with a balloon, and shards of paper. The balloon - after being rubbed against hair becomes negatively charged, and the shards of paper rise near the balloon. This demonstrates static electricity, discovering how one can move positive and negative charges. California Content Standards Met: Life Skills (computer, health, community involvement) Attend weekly movie discussion class – watched Citizen Kane, Toy Story. Cooking Workshop & Kitchen Chemistry – attend weekly class and cook various dishes This month: Students made homemade "takeout" Chinese Egg Rolls. They prepared the stuffing by honing in on their chopping and slicing skills while mincing garlic and ginger and slicing scallions. They learned that scallions are the same as green onions and that ginger is excellent for stomach aches! In addition they learned how to fill and roll an egg roll properly. No more takeout, now you and your children can have fun making these popular appetizers in the comfort of your own home! Students made easy Thanksgiving side dishes; Creamy Corn and Lemon-Dill Green Beans. These are so simple to make that I encouraged them to help with the holiday preparations. They learned that corn as we know it today was cultivated by humans and it is a human invention and it is not a plant that exists naturally in the wild. It is believed that people living in central Mexico developed corn at least 7000 years ago from a wild grass called, teosinte. They then learned that corn was not introduced to Europe until after Columbus. However, corn was definitely on the table during the first Thanksgiving in 1621, and not the sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie that makes up the modern day Thanksgiving feast Studied Graphic Design and Photoshop California Content Standards Met: Other Interests (music, arts, foreign language) Attends Multimedia Art & Comic Strip Drawing class and covered the following concepts: Fiery Phoenix Medium: Mixed Media, learn to compose and draw the artwork – Emphasis on use of movement and color. Super Hero Comic Poster Medium: Mixed Media Objectives: Learn to compose and draw a comic character poster – Gain more familiarity with elements of comic artwork. 3D Hands Medium: Pencils, Colored Markers Objectives: Learn and practice a drawing technique for creating a 3D rendering of your hand. Attended a weekly Graphic Design & Photoshop class and learned how to create the cover for the yearbook at Learn Beyond The Book. Worked on recording and editing a lot of videos to upload to her Youtube channel.
