Department of Mathematics and Computer Science i. Revise Math Major NOTE: These changes are reflected with the addition of the new courses and changes from the previous CUP Report for February 5, 2013. Rationale: Addition of MA 490 as a required (capstone) course MA 490 allows students to explore connections between the different areas of mathematics. The intent is to give students the impression of mathematics as a body of interrelated concepts rather than just a series of distinct courses that they have had to take. MA 490 adds the important component of undergraduate research to the Mathematics program. “Two of Five” -- Breadth and Depth Requirement This addition (in combination with MA 312 Abstract Algebra I) requires knowledge content of at least two of three broad and disparate mathematical areas - abstract algebra, analysis, and probability/statistics. It also requires a sequence in one of those three areas. Deletion of MA Electives List We generally feel that any 300 or 400 level mathematics course that is not specifically a mathematics education course should be sufficient to count as a mathematics elective, particularly in view of an increase in the overall mathematics core credits. Deletion of CS 120A This course no longer exists. Creation of General Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences Concentrations There is sufficient room for the additional credit hours for the students interested in math as a concentration. By creating the two concentrations, we are then allowing our actuarial student graduates will naturally fill in the job market. General Comments None of the proposed changes require additional resources. The majority of the changes involve the inclusion of the “Concentration in Actuarial Sciences.” The other changes are relatively minor considering that the curriculum has not changed substantially in the last 30 years. All of the peers I have spoken with at other universities who have revised programs in the last 10 years have recommended against making sweeping changes. Proposed Bulletin Copy: See Appendix A.
