Visa
All volunteers must have a social budaya visa (social cultural visa) for Indonesia. If
your application to volunteer is accepted, R.O.L.E Foundation can assist you with
securing this visa by providing you with a letter of sponsorship to support your visa
application. We can also help you extend your visa if required. A social cultural is
valid for 2 months, and can be extended up to 4x, allowing you to stay in Indonesia
for a maximum of 6 month. If you wish to volunteer any longer, you will have to
leave the country and apply again.
NOTE: Please allow ample time (min. 1 month prior to departure) to apply for
the visa at your local Indonesian Embassy!
Insurance
All volunteers are required to provide proof of comprehensive travel/medical
insurance. This must include emergency evacuation coverage. ROLE cannot provide
insurance cover for volunteers or interns.
Vaccinations
We recommend the followings vaccinations for volunteers traveling to Indonesia:
Adult Diphtheria & Tetanus: Single booster recommended if none in the previous 10
years. Side effects include sores and fever.
Hepatitis A: Provides almost 100% protection for up to a year, a booster after 12
months provides at least another 20 years protection. Mild side effects such as
headache and a sore arm occur in 5 % to 10% of people.
Typhoid: For volunteers who may eat or drink outside major restaurants and hotels.
We highly recommend this!
Rabies: Three injections in all. A booster after one year will then provide 10 years.
Malaria: Bali is not a malaria risk area, but Lombok is. If you want to make a trip to
Lombok take Deet-based or malaria pills for your trip. You can get malaria pills at the
pharmacy.
Visit your doctor or a travel medicine provider 4 to 6 weeks before your trip. You can
claim your vaccinations on some health insurance, so check your health insurance!
Motorbike
We strongly recommend volunteers to hire a motorbike for the duration of their stay
in Bali, for work and leisure use. Please check with your travel insurance prior to
departure if you are covered for driving a motorbike in Indonesia.
Generally, you need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving
a motorbike and wear a helmet. Check that your IDP has a stamp for Category A
vehicles, a stamp for Category B (cars) does not cover you. If not, you have to
purchase a local motorbike license (Fee at time of writing: 250,000 Rp, valid for 1
month) at the Police Station in Denpasar.
NOTE: If you have an accident, your travel insurance will not pay for your
medical expenses unless you can provide a license and you were wearing a
helmet.
Other
Volunteers and Interns are required to provide their own laptop (if this is not possible,
we can find alternative solutions). Free lunch will be provided and we can provide
volunteers with help in finding accommodation.
NOTE: All internships are voluntary; hence no financial reimbursement can be
offered to interns.

Pre-Departure Fundraising
Operating as a non-for-profit organization we aim to allocate as many of our

However it is a harsh reality that no project can come to fruition without incurring
operational costs. To help us overcome this, we ask that all volunteers commit to a
Page 3 of 10
fundraising target of minimum 700 USD (or equivalent in local currency) prior
to their arrival in Bali. All money raised will cover the base costs of hosting interns,
including daily lunch provisions, and any excess will be allocated to our projects in
women’s education and environmental sustainability.
