ATHLETIC TEAM CONTRACT Let the players play Let the coaches coach Let the officials officiate Let the fans offer encouragement Philosophy The St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy Athletic Department wants participation in interscholastic sports to be fun and rewarding. In order to accomplish this goal, we must have the full support from both players and parents. Interscholastic athletics is highly competitive, but winning is not the primary measure of success. Sportsmanship, respect for participants, and dignity in the face of adversity are far more important than the outcome of the contest. All athletes do not perform at the same level, but all can demonstrate effort, dedication, and fair play. A St. Andrew’s athlete believes in: A commitment to achieving individual and team goals through leadership and teamwork A commitment to preparation and enhancing lifelong skills A commitment to exercise and nutrition, which contributes to the development of an athlete’s mental, emotional, and physical well being A commitment to those who are supporting me (parents, family, coaches, friends, etc.) Student Eligibility All athletes are required to have a valid medical evaluation (physical) before the start of the season. Students must achieve a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average for the most recently completed marking period, with no more than one (1) failing grade (If a student’s GPA drops below a 2.4, a parent/coach meeting may be required to ensure that participation in sports is not interfering with academics). Students must attend a minimum of four (4) academic hours of the school day in order to participate in a practice or games. If the Head of Schools, or designee grants an excused absence for a prescheduled activity, or an unforeseen emergency, the student may participate on that day. The use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs at any time and/or in any place, is strictly prohibited, and will result in immediate removal from the team. Participation Standards Exhibit public behavior that will reflect positively on the St. Andrew’s community, my team and myself Exhibit responsible, RESPECTFUL, and trustworthy behavior to teammates and the coach Exert efforts to maintain a high level of academic achievement Comply with all team and school rules, regulations and policies Exhibit appropriate behavior at all team and school related activities 210 S. We have your child’s best interest at heart and only want what is best for them. As a parent, part of enjoying your children’s participation in competitive sports is watching them enjoy the game themselves, developing skills and discipline, improving their performance and of course having fun. With that being said, it is asked that all parents refrain from coaching students during practices/games, yelling obscene gestures at coaches, players, and umpires. Only words of encouragement may come out of the mouths of parents. Communication with Coaches Parents should not attempt to address coaches immediately after a game or practice. Coaches have many post game/practice responsibilities, including supervision of players. Also, the post game/practice period is often emotionally charged, and not conducive to productive discussion. If a parent feels a need to communicate a concern, the parent should contact the coach and/or athletic director to arrange a later meeting. Below are some guidelines we ask our parents to follow: I will not force my child to participate in any sports he/she does not want to I will pledge to actively monitor my child’s academic progress and reinforce the importance of academic achievement I will remember that my child plays sports for his/her enjoyment, not for mine I will teach my child to play by the rules of the game and resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence I will maintain self control and emotional discipline while at all events I will speak with the coaching staff in private should I have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding my child or any child’s well being I will let the coaches coach, players play, and officials officiate I will refrain from coaching any student during practices or games I will respect the decisions made by coaches, officials and other team parents at all times I will support my child and my child’s teammates in the most positive way possible By agreeing to this code of conduct, I acknowledge that my child’s activity is for his/her own enjoyment and not mine. Should I deliberately ignore my responsibilities as a parent, I may be subject to disciplinary action such as being asked to leave any event or practice with the possibility of being banned from ALL future events. I promise to uphold my parental 210 S.
