Presenter One: Rebecca Sng – Honours, Master of Psychology (Clinical) & Master of
Applied Psychology
When applying for Honours or Masters degree, the following is taken into account o Psychology subject marks o Clinically relevant experience (e.g. Lifeline) o UOW students
Places are limited so Rebecca encourages you to apply for multiple degrees.
Now little difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist do not have to do a clinical postgraduate course
4 + 2 path – Honours year plus 2 years of supervision o Supervision places are limited o Can be difficult to finish all requirements (e.g. tests, etc.) o Still gets you accreditation as Psychologist o However, is discouraged as an option
5 + 1 path – Honours, Masters of Applied Psychology plus 1 year supervision o Degree is good to learn more practical skills for placement o Coursework is similar to the 1 st semester of Masters of Psychology o The course is about making the journey between student to therapist o Complete many of the requirements in the degree before moving into your 1 year supervision o Can be completed part-time and is less dependent on marks o Strongly encouraged to apply for both Masters o Clinically relevant experience is seen as a bonus during the application process
Clinically relevant experience can include – volunteer work, counselling, working with people with special needs or disabilities, etc.
6 years – 4 year undergraduate plus 2 years postgraduate o The Masters of Clinical Psychology is the two year degree that, once complete, will give you full registration as a psychologist o For more information please see the course outline
Presenter Two: Lindsay Murphy – Lifeline, Volunteering
Good option to gain clinically relevant experience in mental health sector
Lifeline’s goal is to have an Australia free of suicide
Training is a 6-week course, is quite intensive so make sure you have the time before you commit o Costs $350 if working and $250 if studying o Costs Lifeline about $3, 000 to train a Telephone Crisis Supporter (TCS)
As a TCS you are expected to show empathy, unconditional positive regard and nonjudgement with every caller
Can be a mentally demanding job, however TCS’s are supported fully through the training processes.
This support continues throughout your time at Lifeline. There is a supervisor for every shift that you can talk to and Lifeline encourages self-care after every shift
Lifeline asks that you commit to a one 4-hour shift per week for at least two years after training.
Three training courses are available next year (no max. for number of students)
You are encouraged to also attend an information session if you are considering taking on this role

Presenter Three: Simone Favelle – Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology)/(Clinical
Psychology), Doctor of Psychology (Clinical)
Research degrees o MPhil: 2 years, research thesis only o PhD: 3 years, research thesis only
Clinical psychology o 5 + 1 Path: 2 years o Clinical Masters: 2 years o Professional Doctorate or DPsyc: 3/5 years (not offered at UOW post 2016) o PhD in Clinical Psyc (Clinical Masters + research: 4 years
Entry requirements for PhD: o Minimum Class 2 Div 1 (2:1) Honours
First class (Class 1) Honours = 85 HD across all of your Honours subjects and thesis combined
Class 2 Div Honours = 75 D across all of your Honours subjects and thesis combines
Can convert from a MPhil to a PhD if you demonstrate capacity to do the work
Papers, conference presentations/ publications o Have a research plan and supervisor lined up
Entry requirements for MPhil: o Minimum Class 2 Div 2 (2:2) Honours (= 65 CR across all of your Honours subjects and thesis combined) o Have a research plan and supervisor lined up

Presenter Four: Michael Matthias – Options after 3-year/4-year Psychology degree
Graduates have good skills to market after 3 years o UOW graduate qualities:
Sound knowledge of psychology
Independent learner
Problem solver
Effective communicator
Responsible o Knowledge of statistics, writing and behavior
Don’t panic if you don’t get into 4 th year
Graduate programs can be in many different areas (e.g. HR)
Working in the mental health field (e.g. counsellor, case worker)
