Day 1:
Desert Rhino Camp, Damaraland
Namibia
Namibia posesses some of the most stunning landscapes in Africa, and a trip through the country is one of the great
road adventures. Natural wonders such as that mighty gash in the earth at Fish River Canyon and the wildlife utopia
of Etosha National Park enthrall, but it’s the lonely desert roads where mighty slabs of granite rise out of swirling
desert sands that will sear themselves in your mind. It’s like a coffee-table book come to life as sand dunes in the
world’s oldest desert meet the crashing rollers along the wild Atlantic coast.
Among all this is a German legacy evident in the cuisine and art nouveau architecture, and in festivals such as
Windhoek’s legendary Oktoberfest.
Namibia is also the headquarters of adventure activities in the region, so whether you’re a dreamer or love hearing
the crunch of earth under your boots, travel in Namibia will stay with you long after the desert vistas fade.
Damaraland
Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and
spectacular rock formations. The major attractions are Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and the
Petrified Forest.
Day Notes
A local representative will meet you upon arrival into Windhoek Airport. From here board your chartered flight and
fly to Desert Rhino Camp, enjoying the changing and desolate desert landscape below. The 450 000-hectare (1
million-acre) Palmwag Concession supports the largest free-roaming population of desert-adapted black rhino in
Africa. Thanks to freshwater springs in the area there is a surprising amount of life here. The opportunity to track
rhino by vehicle and on foot is one of the highlights here. Desert Rhino Camp is run in conjunction with the Save the
Rhino Trust, with a portion of the guest revenue going to the Trust.

Desert Rhino Camp offers an original and exclusive wilderness experience and the possibility of seeing some of the
largest free-ranging population of desert-adapted black rhino in Africa. The camp, set in a wide valley sometimes

flush with grass, has eight comfortable Meru-style tents with en-suite bathrooms. A tented dining and living area and
plunge pool offers uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains, while extraordinary welwitschia plants dot the
plain in front of camp.
Activities include rhino tracking on foot and by vehicle with Save the Rhino Trust trackers (an NGO responsible for
the conservation of the black rhino in the area), full-day outings with a picnic lunch, birding and nature drives. Other
species seen in the area include Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, elephant and lion. Desert Rhino Camp is run in
conjunction with Save the Rhino Trust so in addition to gaining amazing insight into the ecology and conservation of
this area, a portion of guest revenue goes to the Trust and its conservation operations.

Desert Rhino Camp - Rhino tracking on foot and by vehicle
We typically set out in the morning on game drive vehicles, behind the Save the Rhino trackers, who keep records on
where and when previous rhino were seen. This enables them to track the rhino, although due to the vast terrain we
sometimes drive long distances to view them. Once we have located an animal, tracking by foot can take place
depending on the position or location of the rhino.

Desert Rhino Camp - Game Drives
Game drives showcase the magnitude of the landscape and offer the best possibilities of seeing desert-adapted
wildlife including rhino, elephant, giraffe, antelope, zebra and maybe even the area’s predators.
Desert Rhino Camp - Guided nature walks
Learn more about the smaller flora and fauna that live in this incredibly harsh environment. Adaptation to the desert
environment is the miracle of all that survives here.
Desert Rhino Camp - Full day outings with picnic lunch
Travel amongst rolling, rocky hills with scattered euphorbia, ancient welwitschia plants, scrubby vegetation and
isolated clumps of trees through the 450 000-hectare Palmwag Concession and search out the fascinating desertadapted wildlife of the region.
Desert Rhino Camp - Birding
Birding enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the diverse avifauna found in the Palmwag Concession. Key species to look out

Day 3:
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, Skeleton Coast
Skeleton Coast
Known by the Bushmen as the "land God made in anger" the Skeleton Coast is remoteness at its best. Thousands of
miles of sandy desert dotted with shipwrecks meet with the cold waters on the Atlantic and somehow an amazing
array of wildlife and flora manages to survive in this harsh but beautiful environment.
Day Notes
After breakfast and final farewells, fly north to spend three days exploring another diverse and fascinating part of
the Palmwag Concession as well as the legendary Skeleton Coast National Park. Game drives and nature walks within
this rugged landscape reveal wildlife such as desert-adapted elephant to Hartmann’s mountain zebra and giraffe to
name a few. A real highlight of your stay (weather permitting) is a visit to the iconic Skeleton Coast. Travelling by air
or by land, this fascinating journey takes you via the Hoanib River and floodplain, the dune fields and Klein Oasis,
ending at the dramatic rocky coastline itself with its huge Cape fur seal colony.

In a remote area of the Kaokoveld, in a land of bare mountains, gravel-strewn plains and dry riverbeds that draw
fascinating wildlife, lies Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. Both the eight large en-suite tents (including one family unit)
with shaded outdoor lounges and the main area and swimming pool look out over rugged scenery: a wide valley that
slopes down to the almost-always dry Hoanib River.
Explorations of this isolated yet diverse area take place via game drives along the riverbed’s narrow ribbon of
vegetation, where a surprising wealth of desert-adapted wildlife can be found: elephant, giraffe, gemsbok and
springbok, with glimpses of lion and brown hyaena. The Skeleton Coast with its desolate rocky coastline, noisy

colonies of Cape fur seals and remains of shipwrecks is accessed either by a fascinating drive or scenic flight,
depending on the weather.
Hoanib is a hub for researchers studying predators such as desert-adapted lion and brown hyaena; guests can meet
them (when they’re in camp) and view their work in the Research Centre.
The camp is fully solar powered and a joint venture with the neighbouring Conservancies of Anabeb, Torra and
Sesfontein.

Day 6:
Serra Cafema Camp, Kaokoveld
Kaokoveld
The Kaokoveld is a dry, mountainous and relatively undeveloped region that takes in the harsh beauty of the
Skeleton Coast and the coppery sands of the northern Namib Desert. The area is inhabited by three main ethnic
groups – the Damara, Herero and Himba people – each with their unique customs, traditions and rituals.
Day Notes
Fly by light aircraft to the vast Marienfluss Conservancy in the extreme north of Namibia for a three-night stay at
Serra Cafema. The camp is poised along the
lush banks of the Kunene River, a rejuvenating band of green, surrounded by the lunar-like landscape of the Namib
Desert and the Cafema mountain range to the north. Informative nature drives and eco-friendly quad-bike
excursions allow guests to experience this vast, fascinating area. Boating on the river reveals the resident crocodiles
and waterbirds living in this riverside oasis. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight, as is
a visit to a Himba settlement. The intriguing fairy circle phenomenon is best viewed in the Hartmann Valley.
Overnight: Serra Cafema Camp View iBrochure
Set amongst shady trees on the banks of the Kunene River, Serra Cafema is one of the most remote camps in
southern Africa, its Portuguese name originating from the mountains that dominate the northern skyline. Guests fall
asleep to the sound of rushing water, while by day they explore one of the driest deserts in the world.
The camp’s eight unique canvas and thatched chalets, each with its own en-suite bathroom, show great attention to
detail; the elevated decks and simple structures of wood, canvas and thatch create a camp that is at one with its
surroundings. The dining room and pool look out over the Kunene River.
Activities here are varied, including boating (water levels permitting), walking, viewing breathtaking landscapes, as
well as carefully guided quad-bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes. In this isolated region, the Himba
people continue their nomadic, traditional way of life and when in the area, offer guests the opportunity to learn
about their lifestyle and traditions.
