Many ethical values have been violated throughout the years since the late 1700’s. Some of these are judicial injustice, human trafficking, and discrimination. Throughout the years, society has learned to accept these behaviors and beliefs, although now we wouldn’t understand or tolerate these beliefs. Right now in the 21 st
century there are other ethical violations that hopefully in a century or so, will have people asking how we tolerated these violations in our society.
“ She’s beautiful. She’s kind and caring. She’s smart and athletic. She doesn’t care what others think about her. She’s everything I want in a partner. She’s practically perfect! But I can’t tell her my feelings. No one will be able to understand me. Everyone will disapprove of me and my choice of how I live life. I can’t tell her that I like her. I just can’t.” Miranda finished telling her best friend Courtney that she liked one of the girls in their senior class. Being gay or lesbian was not something that most approved in our generation. It is something that most hated and didn’t tolerate until the LGBT rights bill was passed
.
The ethical violation of today is civil rights and discrimination. Not being able to express your love for the same gender is a civil right that had always been prohibited in the United States until 2015. On June 23, 2015, Congress passed a law allowing all those in the LGBT community to be able to marry whoever they would like. The ethical principles that were violated were fairness, respectfulness, and non-maleficence, which is to do no harm. Fairness was not something those in the LGBT community received. They didn’t have the right to be able to marry whoever they wanted, unless they were from the opposite gender. They also had gotten no respect from those who opposed their ideas of love. Lastly, they also received harm in the form of discrimination for liking the same gender.
I think that without this law, life was very unfair and hard for those people in the LBGT community to be able to love those who chose to love. They are not able to control who they are attracted to or who they love. Being a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender is not something they can turn off or stop. It is their life and they should be able to do whatever they chose to do with it. I am glad that those in the LGBT community now have the right to be with those who they love and want to marry. I hope that others are on the same idea as me and will soon accept them too.
People can come to accept such violations by learning to accept those in the LGBT community. These violations are “justified” by the violators because being gay or lesbian was never something common. It was never learned to accept that there are others who like the same gender. In the 1980’s, it was barely known that there were people who liked the same gender.
The news about the LGBT community soon grew and before we knew it, the law to be able to marry whoever they pleased was passed.
An action that I can take now or in the future to make a difference in correcting the ethical violation of civil rights or LGBT rights is helping others to learn to accept this
community. Also, another action is to stop those from discriminating them. Discrimination is a huge problem when it comes to those in the community. People use the reference of “that’s gay” when describing that may be considered lame. We need to stop using gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender as synonyms for the word weak or lame. These are words that should only be used to describe people’s sexuality, just like word straight is. Acceptance and along with the stop of discrimination towards those in the LGBT community are some of the actions that I and others can and should make in order to correct these ethical violations that have gone on for years.
People’s beliefs and behaviors continue to change throughout the course of history.
Hopefully in 100 or more years, people will be asking why we tolerated discrimination against those in the LGBT community, just like we ask now, why society tolerated child abuse unjust detention, and human exploitation. These are some of the many ethical violations that people will experience though out history.
