Guidelines for Disposing of Out of Date, Used, or Damaged Instructional Materials What steps should schools take to dispose of instructional materials? Identify the materials. Remove the items from Instructional Materials Inventory in Destiny. Pack the books in boxes and secure with tape. Contact Warehousing Services’ Dispatch Office at 754-321-4725 to schedule a pick-up. What instructional materials can be disposed? Out of adoption hard cover textbooks, soft cover work texts/consumables, and workbooks. Partially used soft cover consumable textbooks and workbooks from the current adoptions may also be disposed. It recommended that some be retained at the school for temporary use when the instructional materials inventory cannot immediately meet the needs of incoming students. Damaged books. How will schools know if instructional materials are out of date/out of adoption? The District publishes a list of District Approved Core Titles. Both the Elementary District Approved Core Titles and Secondary District Approved Core are posted on CAB Conference Textbook Coordinators and on the Instructional Materials website at http://innovativelearning.browardschools.com/-instructional-materials-titles.html. These documents list the adoption years for each approved title. When new materials are adopted for schools, textbook coordinators are contacted and provided directions for ordering new materials. Once the new materials arrive and schools begin using them, schools select the best time to return out-of-date materials for disposal. How are instructional materials disposed? Schools should not dispose of hard cover or soft cover instructional materials or library media materials by placing them in garbage cans or recycle bins. The Warehousing Services department manages the disposal methods for all schools throughout the District, in compliance with Florida Statute 1006.41. Statute allows for: Innovative Learning and Arts: Instructional Materials Version Date: 1/20/15 Page 1 of 2 Surplus instruction materials are available to other public education programs throughout the county, teachers for use in developing supplemental teaching materials for students*, and all other governmental agencies.
