Entry Requirements:
This two day programme will introduce candidates to the core
counselling skills used in helping relationships. Learners will engage in
formal lecturers related to the micro-skills of counselling and will
participate in triad and dyad practice group. Learners will also take
part in self-directed peer learning related to skills practice.
This course is suitable for those seeking to
pursue their awareness and development in the
field of counselling and/or who work in the
helping/caring professions. Applications are
invited with an interest in augmenting their
understanding and skills in the area of counselling
and psychotherapy. This course may assist those
seeking RPL entry onto our Diploma/BA
programme.

Introduce learners to a practical cutting-edge approach to
mental health care and counselling.
Provide a warm and challenging environment where students
can learn and grow.
Enable learners to begin to develop a clear and transparent
understanding of counselling and psychotherapy that is
congruent with the principles associated with bone fide
helping professionals.
Encourage learners to view this course in the context of
lifelong learning and personal as well as professional
development.
Programme Objectives:
 To augment learners’ interest and to enhance awareness and
development in the field of counselling and psychotherapy
and/or who work in the helping/caring professions.
 To develop learners’ counselling skills to enable them to
improve communication and listening skills.
 To introduce key skills and competencies related to listening
and reflexivity.
Caitriona Kearns, Level 9 SPA Training &
Education, B.Sc. Counselling & Psychotherapy,
MIACP, MWGII. Caitríona is a former full time
counsellor with the HSE. Along with lecturing at
IICP for the past seven years, her teaching
experience includes guest lecturing on the M.Sc.
and Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies at UCD and
Diploma in Drug and Alcohol studies UL.
She is the General Manager and Registrar of IICP
and a module lecturer on the Diploma and BA
(Hons) Degree in Integrative Counselling and
Psychotherapy programmes. She is the co-author
of Adolescents and Substance Use: The
Handbook for Professionals Working with Young
People, which was published by Radcliffe in
November 2013.

QQI Single Subject Certificate.
05 credits at level 6 on the National
Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
Course Structure:
The ethos of the course reflects the Quality School model of
CT/RT/LM, which promotes a warm, safe environment that is free from
fear, criticism and coercion. Each of the two training days will involve
formal lectures, practical and experiential exercises, debate,
discussion and reflection.
Venue:
Learners will complete a practical role-play assignment and reflection
as a means of assessing that the learning outcomes have been
achieved.
