Bourbons & Whiskeys Auchentoshan 12 £3.70 A 12 year old from Auchentoshan, this was aged in European oak Fino sherry barrels before bottling 2010. The results are creamy and very fruity, and at cask strength there's a lot going on. Canadian club £3.50 The renowned Canadian whisky, married in white oak barrels. Canadian Club was founded by whisky mogul Hiram Walker. The nose is of medium-body with notes of barley sugar and aniseed, notes of cut grass and fennel, a hint of straw and a vegetal freshness. The palate is quite sweet and gentle. There are notes of winter spice and dark sugars, a touch of rum. The finish is of medium-sweetness and of medium-length. Laphroaig 10 yr £3.95 Batch three of Laphroaig's new cask strength 10 year old. This is a stunning whisky with oodles (literally oodles) of complexity and flavour. The nose has of hints of cold wood ash and buttered granary toast with not quite enough honey. A very evocative scent, which gives way to peaches and cream and Lapsang Souchong and allspice. The palate is Very robust, and intensely “muscular”, this is a real brute, with all kinds of smokiness. It’s almost like crunching down on a lump of coal (but one coated in beautifully sweet toffee). Hints of motor oil and ground ginger appear. After a time there’s just a hint of cordite in the crisp air of a winter morning… Ardbeg 10 £3.95 Ardbeg 10 Year Old remains a staple favourite of peat-lovers the world over, and with just one sip it’s easy to see why! Vanilla and citrus fruits underpinned with an Incredible Hulk of peat, this is peaty Islay through-and-through. What could make this legendary whisky that bit better? Well how about a specially designed glass? That should do it! Vanilla and citrus fruits lie on a bed of peat with a blanket of sea spray on the nose. The palate is sweet with notes of vanilla pods and zesty lime before that dominating Ardbegian peat sweeps in to round off the dram with a salted caramel finish. Jura 10 £3.70 This is a delicious sherry-matured single malt from the Isle of Jura's Boutique Barrels range. It was distilled in 1993 before a maturation in American white oak. Then it was aged in Oloroso Pasada Sherry Butts, sourced from Gonzalez Byass in Spain. Delicious! Rich, spicy nose with hints of coffee, toffee apples and ginger.Gingerbread and citrus, hints of freshly brewed black coffee, marzipan and pepper on the palate. Malty finish with sweet, juicy sherry and cracked black pepper. Overall A superbly sherried, intense dram from Jura! Lagavulin 16 £5.25 Superbly smoky malt, Lagavulin 16 is a Scotch legend in its own right. This presentation set features a bottle of the 16 year old with two Lagavulin branded Glencairn whisky tasting glasses. Nose is more like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning. Palate is Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke and vanilla finish. Cragganmore 12 £3.80 A sherried 12 year old single malt from Diageo's Classic Malts range, this bottling from the Cragganmore distillery represents Speyside and proffers a rich, slightly floral whisky with barley notes. Nose: Aromatic, floral. Heather, fruit salad, creamy texture. Smoked almonds, stemmy hay. Palate: Rich, honey, stone fruits, chestnuts, walnuts, almonds. Berries. Finish: Smoky, good length, delicate peppery spice. Oban 14 £4.75 A bustling seaside resort has grown up around the distillery in the two centuries since it was first built in the fishing town of Oban. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion and this 14 year old is a classic dram from the distillery. The nose is rich and smoky. The medicinal notes are quite evident with notes of the sea; seaweed, tarry ropes. There are notes of cut hay and wood smoke rising with a gentle estery sweetness. The palate is thick and full. Notes of citrus with smooth sweetness. The smoke wafts with notes of seaweed. The oak is quite rich with grist and cereal and malt. The finish is of good length with fruit and dry oak. Glenlivet 12 £3.80 This is an old edition of the lovely Glenlivet 12 year old. Aged in a mix of casks, this is a classic Speyside dram with oodles of honey and orchard fruit. Beautiful. Nose: A full, rich nose with cream vanilla, warm pastry, toffee, fudge and a hint of aniseed. Toasty cereals and oak develop. Palate: Thick and warm on the tongue with aniseed, dried peels and fudge. Very creamy, stewed apples develop. Finish: Long and spiced finish star anise and digestive biscuits on the tail. Balvenie double wood 12 £4.25 An old, rare edition of Balvenie's beautiful 12 year old DoubleWood whisky - a fabulous malt aged in both bourbon and sherry casks (thus the name!). Nose: Gristy, supple nuttiness, grapey. Palate: Sweet with good body. The bourbon characters develop; gentle spice with a little vanilla, a balancing peat lurking quietly in the substrata. Finish: Dry, spicy, beautifully warming. Balvenie caribbena cask 14 £5.25 This whisky has been matured for 14 years in traditional oak casks before being transferred to Caribbean rum casks to impart some extra flavour. This process has created a well-rounded and drinkable whisky with notes of fruit and vanilla. Nose: The aroma is rich with notes of tropical fruits, namely passion fruit, and creamy toffee. Palate: Sweet vanilla forms a creamy palate with notes of apples and mangos with a hint of orange in the background. Finish: The finish lingers with a vanilla focussed character. Overall: Mouth-coating and fruity with superb balance, this is an excellent new release from the chaps at Balvenie. Glenfiddick 12 £3.80 a very popular dram, and a great proponent of the Speyside style. Malty and fruity. Nose: áGrain. Slightly floral, mineralic. Spirity, orchard fruit, malty, honey. Citrus develops. Palate: áLight, floral, spices. Very smooth. Finish: Sweet, touch of oak and general fruit, oily. Overall: Stereotypical Speyside. Consistent - a good benchmark. Dalwhinnie 15 yr £4.75 A great malt which Jim Murray awarded 95 points in his Whisky Bible, this is excellent value for money. The flavours are simple, but flawless, a clean, crisp 15 year old from the Dalwhinnie distillery, also part of Diageo's Classic Malts range. Nose: Aromatic, toffee, fruit salad, lush nectarine, custard. Floral, apple blossom, honeysuckle. Apple peels, pear, touch of smoke. Palate: Malty. Walnuts steeped in manuka honey with vanilla sponge. Gentle smoke weaves its way through the cereal with a touch of spice. Finish: Long, malty, walnut, almond. Macallan gold sherry cast £12.50 This is the new no-age-statement Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the famous Speyside distillery of Macallan. Macallan's new range has done away with age-statements and instead focuses on the colour of the whisky. The concept being that the older the whisky is the darker it will be... Regardless of how true this really is, it's certainly a great whisky packed with assertive vanilla and citrus flavours. Nose: This burnished gold spirit presents a lemon citrus nose, the orange peel and an interlacing sweetness that softens but doesn't eliminate the zest. A quiet note of vanilla is followed by dark chocolate - more assertive, yet not overly so - with a lingering floral and light oak notes. Palate: Citrus and boiled sweets rule the palate, along with hints of ginger and cinnamon, while soft oak tones reveal toasted apples. Finish: The finish is medium sweet, malty and slightly dry. Macallan 18 £4.25 Another vintage of The Macallan's celebrated 18 year old, matured in the finest ex-Sherry casks from Jerez. Tremendous single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside. Nose: Classic spiced dried fruits and creamy vanilla with orange peel, crystallised ginger and apple wood. Palate: Rum and raisin, dates, caramel and cloves alongside custard and citrus hints. Rich and satisfying. Finish: Spices and dried fruits from the palate remain alongside warming ginger and refined oakiness. Overall: Classic stuff from The Macallan. Bushmills black bush £3.50 Black Bush is a great blend from Bushmills, made up mostly of malt whiskey aged for 11 years in sherry casks before blending. Nose: Barley, grape, lemon. Palate: Very fruity, milky. Finish: Barley, biscuity, astringent. Bushmills 10yr £3.50 A superb 10 year old Irish single malt and winner of Best Irish Single Malt Whiskey at the 2007 World Whiskies Awards. Bushmills are always scored highly in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, with the 10 year old being awarded 92.5 points in 2013! Nose: Banana skins. Palate: Medium, very fruity, chocolate pudding. Finish: Floral, tannic. Overall: Add a drop of water and it tastes just like nectarine chunks in low fat yoghurt! Tullamore Dew £3.80 The 'Dew' in Tullamore Dew comes from the initials of a General Manager at the Tullamore distillery in the later 19th Century, named Daniel E Williams. The nose is fruity and biscuity. There are gristy notes with caramel and toffee sweetness and plenty of peels. The palate is of good body with notes of sherried peels and spice, granary toast with butter and honey, grains and vanilla cream. The finish is quite vegetal and long with notes of caramel and toffee. Jameson £3.30 A classic blend from Ireland, established by the renowned John Jameson. Really smooth and well put together, a very enjoyable Irish whiskey The nose is full and floral with a smooth sweetness. Marmalade and fudge, Madeira and a little cut grass note. The palate is thick and of good body with notes of orchard fruits, both fresh and cooked with a little vanilla cream. The finish is of medium-length with spice and honey. J&B £3.30 Europe's most popular Scotch whisky. This is a blend of 42 different whiskies, created by J&B, Justerini and Brooks. The nose is of medium-body with a distinct nutty note. There are hints of fruit and dry wood, a citrus character and a little barley. The palate is of medium-body with good balance. There are notes of berry fruits, hints of cut fruit salad and caramel. The finish is quite short with a touch of oak and spice. Chivas 12yr £3.50 Chivas Regal is a world-famous Scotch blend which was first made in the early 20th century by Chivas Brothers. The company can trace its roots back to 1801, with the opening of a grocers at Number 13 King Street, Aberdeen. Selling luxury food, coffee and spices, it wasn't until half a century later that the company started to make whisky, and then not until post-US Prohibition that Chivas Regal 12 Year Old was first officially released. F. Paul Pacult described Chivas Regal 12 as "the blend for grown-ups", awarding it an impressive 9 out of 10. It's a very apt statement - this is a very refined blended whisky, with herbs, honey and fruit leaping forth on the palate. Regularly lauded by the critics, this is a superb blend in its price category, representing great value for money. One of the best American whiskeys we've ever tried… Nose: Sweet and soft, with notes of wheat, corn and custard. Caramel, candy floss and dried fruits. Palate: Rich and thick with notes of caramel, vanilla, dates, walnuts, coffee beans and soft oak. Very buttery and incredibly smooth. Finish: Long and spicy with notes of gingernut biscuit and golden syrup on the tail. Woodford reserve £3.50 The mashbill for Woodford Reserve features a high percentage of rye: 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malt. Unusual also for being triple distilled and having the lowest proof upon entering the barrel where it matures for at least six years. A must have Kentucky bourbon. Makes a wonderful OldFashioned cocktail! The nose is quite thick and creamy. There are notes of honey and spice, leather, a touch of cocoa, a little smoke, toasty oak and vanilla cream with a hint of butterscotch. The palate is thick and full. There are notes of espresso beans, winter spice, cereal sweetness, plenty of rye, ground ginger, almond oil, toasty oak and a little rum. The finish is long and mature with notes of cereals and toasty oaken spice. Buffalo trace £3.60 A great whiskey, with oodles of vanilla, barrel char and spicy complexity. Nose: Spicy and sweet with caramel, creamy toffee eclairs, hints of cinnamon, rum spice and cereal sweetness. Palate: Brown sugar, toffee apple, sweet oak, custard, oily espresso beans, a touch of chocolatecovered raisins and toasty wood. Finish: Good length with sweet spices, cinnamon gum and toffee. Blantons gold £4.95 A superb single barrel bourbon, bottled at cask strength. Blanton's Gold is distilled from a mashbill of corn, rye and malted barley. Each bottle is hand filled, sealed, labeled and individually numbered. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt Nose: Oaky, dry. Plenty of fruit, mostly dried. Chewy peels, floral. Spicy. Palate: Complex, enjoyable top notes, chewy oak. Dark stone fruits, deep spices, peppy and rich. Finish: Long, toffee, drying. Bullet bourbon £3.95 Bulleit is bottled in an old-fashioned style bottle, there is a relatively high proportion of rye in the mashbill which proffers plenty of pep. This bourbon was awarded a Gold medal at the 2004 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Nose: Fairly pungent and peppy with notes of marmalade and toasty oak. Here is a hint of smoke with a beautiful, creamy banana milkshake. Palate: Quite full with notes of zesty orange, a hint of dried peel, a note of winter spice, a cigar box character and a touch of perfume. Finish: Medium-length with plenty of spice Maker mark £3.60 Maker’s Mark maintain that they distil their bourbon to the lowest proof of any US whiskey distillery. This proffers a bourbon that retains a rich flavour. Developed by Bill Samuels Sr, he replaced rye with red winter wheat to reduce the burning sensation. The nose is quite fruity and rich. There are lovely notes of spiced honey and mixed peels, a little malmsey and a touch of cut fruit with toasty oak providing a backbone. The palate is rich and full. There are notes of rye and spice, barley malt, a little nut oil with butterscotch and vanilla. The finish is quite sweet with butterscotch and dry oak spice. Pikesville £3.80 This straight rye is made in the Maryland/Potomac style of rye whiskey. Pikesville offers a spicy, rich character. Great in a Manhattan! Sazerac rye £3.70 The whiskey is named for the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, birthplace of the famous – and sublime – Sazerac cocktail. The Coffee House was acquired by Thomas H Handy, owner also of Peychaud’s Bitters. Originally, he sold bottles of the Sazerac cocktail, which was originally made with Cognac. Today, this glorious libation is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery. A sweet, balanced nose with allspice and ginger, orange peels and pepper. The palate is thick and mouth-watering with syrupy notes of over ripe Seville oranges and ground spices, beautiful delivery. The finish is of medium-length with tingling sweet spices. Red stag £3.50 Jim Beam infused with the natural essence of Black Cherry. Quite pleasant in a liqueur-y sort of way Jack Daniels £3.30 A top-selling bottling from the Jack Daniel distillery, the mashbill is made up of 80% corn, 12% rye and 8% malt. The spirit is filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal to produce a mellow, slightly smoky character, thus making it Tennessee whiskey... The nose is quite light and smooth with plenty of sweetness. There are hints of dry spice and oily nuts, a touch of smoke. The palate is quite smooth and soft with notes of banana milkshake, a mixed nut note, a touch of caramel with crème anglaise. The finish is quite sweet with a little cereal sweetness and toasty oak. Gentleman jack £3.80 More impressive and upmarket version of the classic American Whiskey . The only Tennessee Whiskey that's been charcoal mellowed twice, Gentleman Jack offers full-bodied flavor, a silky finish, and the ultimate smoothness. Jack daniels single barrel £4.75 Bottled from a single barrel from the Jack Daniel distillery. Each barrel is selected by the Master Distiller by its suitability as a stand alone product before being bottled. The nose is of good body with plenty of toasty oak, there are notes of corn and lovely cereal sweetness, there is a good smoke note, a little spice and toffee. The palate is full and mouth-filling. There are notes of cereal sweetness, the rye is in evidence with a touch of cigar box and nut oils, a little spice and an aniseed character. The finish is of good length with a hint of citrus and plenty of cereal sweetness. Hakushu 12 Year Old £4.80 A 12 year old single malty from Suntory. The Hakushu distillery sits in the forests not far from the Japanese Alps. Nose: Light and crisp with fresh notes of cut hay and sweet mixed peels, a little hazelnut and barley malt. Palate: Clean with notes of cut fruits, gentle barley malt and smoke. A floral character with citrus zest. Finish: Sweet and spicy. Yamazaki 12 Year Old £4.95 This 12 year old from Yamazaki first came onto the market in 1984 and was the first seriously marketed Japanese single malt whisky. The nose is of good body with plenty of nut oils and zest, a pleasant floral character with a little tropical fruit and a rooty note. The palate is smooth and soft with good sweetness and winter spice. A lovely citrus note develops with more tropical fruit notes and a little rum. The finish is medium with fruit and zest.
