The ability to teach a second science discipline is an advantage. The person appointed will: Be a confident teacher of science to GCSE with the potential to develop into sixth form Be interested in developing their use of ICT within Science to enhance learning Have enthusiasm for the subject and be willing to participate in extracurricular activities. Be a team player, able to work within a collaborative department The appointee will teach Science across KS3 and KS4, with the possibility of teaching sixth form. The position will be largely based on one of our two campuses, though the faculty works to support colleagues across both sites through joint professional development, meetings and resources. The appointee will report to the Directors of Science and Technology. THE FACULTY The Science faculty is made up of the Science teams at the Parkside campus and Coleridge campus. Following federation between the two schools in September 2005, the two separate departments merged to form a single faculty across the two schools. The Science Faculty at Parkside is based on Mud Lane, a short walk from the main campus. It is housed in a block of 6 well equipped laboratories, two small offices and a large prep room and at Coleridge the faculty is housed in 5 well equipped labs, with three prep rooms. The staff have a variety of experiences, some working in industry before become teachers. This means there is huge expertise within the Faculty which encourages innovation and collaboration to make the curriculum as exciting and engaging as possible. ENRICHMENT Staff are encouraged to get involved with the wider role of science and STEM, running clubs and trips as an integral part of how we deliver science at Parkside. We organise trips to the National Space centre, Competitions and lectures in the University departments, have visiting speakers to address the students and sixth form visits to working research laboratories. On both campuses after school science clubs are offered, some allowing students to obtain CREST awards or participate in Science days. The topics are taught through rotations allowing staff to specialise in the topic they choose. All teachers are expected to teach all three science areas in KS3. Students in year 7 are taught in 5 mixed ability groups, and in year 8 we do apply a broad banding system within the 5 groups. In year 9 we have a curriculum that introduces the students to GCSE concepts and parts of the syllabus that we deliver at KS4. Again, the topics are taught through rotations allowing staff to specialise in the topic they choose. Students in year 9 are also broadly banded in the 5 groups, based on probably GCSE course allocation. KS4 In KS4, year 10 and 11, we deliver three options to the students. The students are taught in 6 groups at KS4, allowing for adaptation of group size depending on student need. The Edexcel level 2 Certificate (IGCSE equivalent) is followed by a large proportion of the students. Those on this syllabus were assessed to be achieving an overall 6c minimum in year 9. This offers three separate GCSE qualifications, and is taught by teachers in their specialisms. The OCR 21st Century Triple science course is then followed by those students falling below an overall 6c, but still aiming for a minimum C grade pass. This offers three separate GCSE passes, and is taught by teachers in their specialisms as far as the timetable allows. The OCR 21st Century Double science course is then followed by our lower attaining students, some of whom are still aiming for C grades, but for whom the triple science course would be too challenging. This offers two GCSE passes and, although is divided into the three science areas, teachers may be expected to teach out of their specialism in this course. KS5 The sixth form IB syllabus offers a chance to really specialise, but teaching of this cannot be guaranteed. The IB is a challenging post 16 course, and classes are generally smaller than lower down the school. Within science we deliver IB Biology, Chemistry and Physics at both higher and standard levels, General Science at standard level and some staff contribute to the teaching of Theory of Knowledge.
