Station 1
Read through the Sound and Energy materials and answer the following questions.
1.
The lowest point of a wave is its ______________________________.
2.
The number of vibrations in one second is the ____________________ of a wave.
3.
The ____________________ of a wave depends on the amount of energy it has.
4.
A(n) ______________________________ is energy moving through a substance in a wave.
5.
A(n) _______________________ is reflected sound waves.
Station 2
Diagram the two types of waves you created.
Wave #1
Wave #2

What type of wave is this?
What did you notice as you moved the spring at different speeds? ______________________________________________
Station 3
Read through the Sound and Energy materials and answer the following questions.
1.
The __________________ carries sound signals to the brain.
2.
The amplitude of a sound is measured in ___________________________.
3.
The frequency of a sound wave is measured in _______________________.
4.
The ______________________ is how high or low a sound is.
5.
The tight layer of skin that vibrated when sound waves hit it is a(n) _______________________.
Station 4
Which tuning fork produces sound that lasts longest? ___________
Which fork has the loudest sound? ___________
Explain what happens when you hit the tuning fork and touch part of the fork to your forehead. ____________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
What happens when you touch different parts of the tuning fork on different parts of the can? _____________________

Station 5
Wave Webquest: Interactive Model
Click on Ms. Evans app and go to Webquests (underneath 7th grade science). Find the webquest available for Unit 5
Waves and click on the link. When you go to the Physics Classroom website click on LAUNCH INTERACTIVE. You will
manipulate the settings of the wave to answer the questions below.
1.
2.
3.
4.
When you increase the frequency, what occurs to the wavelength? _______________________________
When you increase the amplitude, what occurs to the image of the wave? _________________________
When you decrease the amplitude, what occurs to the image of the wave? _________________________
When you increase the frequency to 116Hz and increase the wave speed to the 216cm/s, what changes in the
image of the wave? ________________________________________________________________________
5. As you change the wave speed, what other wave property changes with it? ________________________
Station 6
In the table below, draw six pictures of what you observed using the two tuning forks. Show what happened to the
pepper and water. DRAW the tuning fork to show where you touched each can.
Pepper with low energy
Pepper with high energy
Can with water
256 Hz
1024 Hz
Station 7
Read through the Sound and Energy materials and answer the following questions.
1.
The part of a wave in which molecules are squeezed together is a(n) ______________________________.
2.
The top point of a wave is its _________________________.
3.
The part of a wave in which the molecules are pulled apart is a(n) ______________________.
4.
In a(n) ________________________ wave, the vibrations move in the same direction as the wave.
5.
The vibrations are right angles to the direction of the wave in a(n) ______________________________ wave.
Station 8
Rank the materials used from the best to worst sound conductor. 1 is the best and 5 is the worst.
#1 _____________________________
#4 ___________________________
#2 _____________________________
#5 ___________________________
#3 _____________________________
Where have you seen different materials used to either mute or amplify sounds? _________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Station 9
In the space provided, draw a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave. On each wave label the following parts:
wavelength, amplitude, frequency, resting point, crest and trough (transverse), and compression and rarefaction
(longitudinal).
Transverse Wave
Large wavelength &
Low frequency
Longitudinal Wave
Tight compressions
& Wide rarefactions
Station 10
Telephone Cup
What part of the telephone
does sound travel through?
Why does the string have to
be tight for you to hear the
message?
CONCLUSIONS:
In your lab group discuss the questions below. Use the data you have recorded during the lab and information you have
read from the Sound and Energy materials. Right your answers to the questions in the space provided.
1. How does increasing the speed of a vibration affect a transverse wave? How does increasing the speed of a
vibration affect a longitudinal wave?
2. How do sound waves change depending on their volume? Use your observations to describe a how a sound wave
must have looked like with one specific volume from Station 4.
3. How does Station 6 show the sound waves are vibrations?
4. Student A reads his essay with his paper and clipboard held in front of his face. Student B reads her essay with
her elbow on the table and her hand at her mouth. Student C reads her essay with nothing in front of her face.
Which student will be the clearest? Who will be the hardest to hear? Use observations from Station 8 to explain
your answer.
5. Does sound travel better in solids, liquids, or gases? Use observations from Station 10 to justify your reasoning.
