The Secret Tunnel
Chapter One
One dark, stormy night a little girl named Mary sat alone in
her gloomy bedroom in the drafty, old holiday cottage
where her parents took her every summer. She was busy
scribbling in her notebook a wonderful, romantic love story
about a princess and a brave, fearless prince. Suddenly, she
heard a rattle from the holiday cottage kitchen. Mary ran to
her brother’s room as if she was spooked.
“What are you doing in those clothes?” gasped Josh,
looking at her awful dress. “Be more adventurous!” Josh
loved going on adventures. He even pretended to be one of
the Famous Five from the brilliant book he was reading.
Josh wore ratty, ripped clothes and everywhere he went his
big, black dog Buster always lolloped along beside him. Mary ran away frowning. She loved her blue dress
and didn’t like adventures.
Suddenly, the red wooden door burst open. In ran Scarlet and Kieran, Scarlet rubbing her nose on her dirty,
muddy, ripped clothes as she skipped into the room. Scarlet loved playing in the forest, climbing thick trees
and learning how to make fire. However, her brother Kieran was not the same. Kieran loved football! He
wore his red football kit and took a spotty, black and white football everywhere he went. His favourite
team in the entire world was Liverpool.
Scarlet and Kieran were sister and brother as were Mary and Josh; Mary preferred spending time with her
crazy cousins than she did her annoying brother. They went together to this holiday cottage every year.
Scarlet was best buddies with Josh and Mary always hung out with Kieran. But they were only best friends
because Scarlet and Josh loved adventures and Mary and Kieran loved to read football stories together in
there dark, gloomy bedroom.
Chapter 2
The next morning, Mary blinked her big blue eyes as the yellow sun shone
through her pink, flowery curtains. Outside, Scarlet and Josh were climbing
trees whilst Mary and Kieran were busy reading together about their top
ten football players in Kieran’s bright red room. Suddenly, a big whoosh of
wind went past blowing the trees out of the ground and making the red
holiday cottage fly into the sky. As Mary rushed to see if everything was
okay, she heard a scream. Clinging desperately to the branches of the trees,
Scarlet and Josh clambered towards the open front door – still hurtling
through the skies. But it was hopeless… they just could not reach. Kieran
joined Mary at the bedroom window, watching in horror as the cottage
tumbled through the clouds like a washing machine. “What's the matter?” asked Kieran, who had no idea
what was happening and wondering WHAT was going on.
“We are in the air and I don't know where Scarlet and Josh are!” cried Mary. “I wish they were here. They
would know what to do.” Mary was so out of breath that Kieran went to get her water, meanwhile, Scarlet
and Josh were trying to find a way back to the holiday cottage but they were just plain lost!
An hour went past and then Josh had an idea. “I know what to do!” shouted Josh all of a sudden. “We can
climb through the big, brown trees all the way back to the wooden holiday cottage.” So the both of them
began to climb and climb and climb. Finally they reached the holiday cottage and started banging madly on
the door. “Mary! Kieran! Open the door!” shouted Scarlet at the top of her voice, making her throat
crackle. Immediately, Mary ran to the door and flung it open. She was so glad to see them. She threw her
arms around her and hugged her tightly. So tightly in fact, that Scarlet found it hard to breathe!
Chapter 3
Mary, Josh, Kieran and Scarlet clung on to the floor of the holiday cottage’s dark gloomy living room, as it
continued to fly wildly through the air. They were planning how to solve this mystery. While the boys were
muttering about an escape plan, the girls packed a large bag, filled with essential items like torches, snacks
and spare clothes. They all shot up as they heard a strange noise from the kitchen floorboards. CREAK!
Something was creeping towards them but what could it be…
“Let's check the kitchen to see what is causing that sound,” whispered Josh as quiet as a mouse. As they
walked through the kitchen, Scarlet fell down a hole and screamed. Josh decided that Mary, Kieran and
him of course should go down the hole. So they all had to jump down.
When they got to the bottom of the hole it was gloomy and dark. “Has anybody got a torch?” asked Mary
(who was shivering in the darkness) really cold and wishing that she had brought a big, red, wooly jumper.
“Luckily for you, I have brought my brand new silver and gold torch!” said Josh boastfully.
As they strolled farther away from the holiday cottage
they saw a red flashing light spinning round and round in
front of their eyes. As they walked towards it, Scarlet
touched it and all of a sudden she was gone. “Where did
Scarlet go?” asked Mary who was puzzled. The light kept
spinning round and round. “I don’t know but let's do what
Scarlet did.” replied Josh.
So, the three of them copied Scarlet. When they got to
the other side Scarlet was not there.
“Where did Scarlet wander off to now?” asked Mary. “She
sure likes adventure.” Josh [who was usually the first
person to come up with an answer] had no idea what to
do.
Chapter 4
Two hours had passed and Mary and Josh still had not seen any sign of Scarlet. Meanwhile Scarlet was
checking every tunnel in the holiday cottage. Then suddenly she walked past a tunnel and saw a trail of
footprints. Could it lead to the others or could it lead to danger...
“We’ll have to go and look for Scarlet” said Mary who was starting to like this adventure but at the same
time she was feeling extremely drowsy. “I can’t bear any more waiting.” She said. So Mary and Josh went
to look for Scarlet while Kieran stayed at the flashing light in case Mary and Josh returned.
As they went past the tunnel, Mary suddenly spotted some footprints. “Josh, these must be Scarlet’s
footprints.” said Mary who was glad she had spotted them. “Let's follow them.” So they followed the
footprints and finally caught up to Scarlet.
Scarlet was so happy to see them. She wondered how they found her and where her brother Kieran was.
Josh told her the whole story. As they walked through the tunnels Mary suddenly disappeared with a loud
POP! Where did she go? They had no clue.As Josh and Scarlet finally arrived back at the flashing light they
frantically searched for Mary but no luck.
“Where has Mary gone?” asked Kieran. Scarlet and Josh did not answer.
“We’d better go looking for her or we will never find her and I better go with you this time.” replied Kieran.
So off again they strolled through the tunnels the same way they had before. Then suddenly all three of
them began to feel queasy and felt themselves being transported to a completely different place. “Where
are we?” asked Scarlet blinking. “Hey look guys,” Scarlet exclaimed. “Mary must have fallen down this hole
look! There are loads of sweet wrappers here and we all know how much Mary loves sweets.” So they
started following the candy wrapper trail.
Chapter 5
Scarlet, Kieran and Josh finally found Mary. “Mary, we have been looking for you everywhere,” said Kieran
running up to Mary and giving him a big hug. After all the excitement they started to explore the cave.
Suddenly something or somebody was coming towards them. It kept coming and coming. Scarlet tried to
stop them coming but they were unable to stop them. The shadow of the woman or the man was long,
skinny and dark.
“I am king of all dark lands," the shadow said all of a sudden." My name is Dark Lord and you are here to
stop everything floating. Am I right? Answer me!"
“Hello my name is Mary and YES we are here to stop everything floating, " said Mary looking around to find
something to get past Dark Lord with out him seeing. But she could not find anything. Then she had an
idea. She looked in her rucksack and found a rope but it was not long enough.
" Josh, Kieran, Scarlet, have you got anymore ropes?” Mary asked. So all three of them checked in there
rucksack but only Scarlet and Josh packed a rope . They tied the ropes together and threw it to the other
side then they steadied it and started crawling on the rope trying to make sure Dark Lord could not see
him.
They were half way there when all of a sudden Kieran fell fast asleep. “What are we going to do with
Kieran?" asked Mary. “I will try and drag him and you girls go ahead," replied Josh trying to stop Kieran
snoring in case he woke Dark Lord's big, mean dogs. So Mary and Scarlet went while Josh was getting really
tired of Kieran.
Chapter 6
An hour had passed, and the girls were trying to work out how to stop every thing floating. Soon Josh
arrived with Kieran still sleeping. " Josh we need Kieran to work out how to stop everything floating but he
is asleep and he is the best with computers." saaid Mary who was starting to worry.
Suddenly Kieran woke up. He straight away knew what to do. He pressed the red button, the blue button
and the yellow button. Suddenly the ground rumbled and woke Dark Lord. The children were so frightened
that they tried to get out as quickly as they could but there was a problem. Nothing happened. What
would they do?
Mary looked around the room looking for a stop button. In no time she saw a pile of books covering the
red stop button. She pressed it and the ground fell straight down. “Come on, let’s get out of here.” said
Mary in a hurry. They ran out with Dark Lord following behind them.
Dark Lord Pressed the button to stop them getting out but they made it just in time. “Phew! That was
close.” said Kieran who was bursting to watch the football match. Mary was not like that anymore. She
started to join Scarlet and Josh with their adventures.
“What a fantastic adventure,” said Mary.” I wonder what adventure we will have next.” Suddenly, their
parents said they had a go. What a
brilliant adventure. I think they will
enjoy the next adventure.
