We live in a world that has placed importance on only the here and now. Having a faith in the possibility of eternal salvation in Heaven or damnation in Hell seems to have been erased from the minds and hearts of humanity, including many Roman Catholics. With this in mind, I have tried to give some explanation here of the Church’s teaching on sin as we enter into this holy and reflective season of Lent. Mortal Sin is defined by St. Augustine as something said, done or desired which is contrary to God’s law. Mortal sin is a human voluntary act. The Scripture defines Mortal Sin as act of disobedience; as an insult to God; as something detested and punished by God; as injurious to the sinner; to be expiated by penance, a transgression of God’s law; a disobedience punished by God, an offence to God. Mortal Sin deprives our souls of sanctifying grace and of our salvation through Jesus Christ. Perhaps the sinful act passes from our memory, but the sinner is left in a state of habitual distance from God. One mortal sin suffices to incur punishment of Hell. This sinful state is voluntary and remains until forgiveness is granted from God through the Sacrament of Penance. Mortal Sin deprives us from receiving any Sacrament, including the reception of the Eucharist, except the Sacrament of Penance. Here are examples of Mortal Sin: Disobeying any of the Ten Commandments Anger (Enraged, Wrathful, Irate, Indignant, Feeling or Showing Anger) Envy (Grudging Desire for Another’s Advantage or Excellence) Gluttony (One who Eats, Drinks, or Indulges to Outrageous Excess) Greed (Selfish or Acquisitive Desire beyond Reason) Pride (Haughty Behavior, Ostentatious Display, Excessive Elation in Your Success) Sloth (Laziness or Indolence [Insensitive to Pain or Slow to Heal]) Lust (Sexual Desire of an Intense Longing, to an Unrestrained, Sharp Degree) Venial Sin is essentially different from Mortal Sin. Venial sin is only in an imperfect way contrary to God’s law. It does not deprive our souls of sanctifying grace and of our salvation through Jesus Christ. Venial Sin is reparable. It is called venial precisely because it is pardonable. It does not merit eternal punishment as Mortal sin does, but rather it merits the temporary punishment of Purgatory. Here are examples of Venial Sins Not Loving God with your Whole Heart, Mind, Soul, and Strength Tempting God Trying to Control Things, rather than Seeking God Will Entertaining Thoughts against the Faith Indifference or Ingratitude towards God Not Trusting God Failure to Accept Unconditionally the True Teachings of the Catholic Church Failure to support the Church Financially Cursing thoughtlessly Using the Lord’s Name in surprise, or anger (without thinking or habitually) Arriving Late to Mass, or Leaving Early, without good reason Failure to Pay Attention, or Participate at Mass Vanity Stubbornness Selfishness Both Mortal and Venial Sin has ongoing effects. Even as we confess our sin in the Sacrament of Penance the effects of our sin continues. Here are a couple of examples. A person steals a sum of money from his employer. Certainly stealing is a Mortal Sin. Once confessed the sin is forgiven and removed from the person’s soul. However what were the effects of that stealing? Did it affect the economics of company and other employees? Did it result in someone else being accused or dismissed? Was it spent on something that brought the person further way from God? A person spreads a rumor about another person. Certainly false witness of another person is a Mortal sin. Once confessed the sin is forgiven and removed from the person’s soul. However what were the effects of that false witness? Did that rumor continue to other persons? Did it affect the reputation of the person gossiped about? How did it affect that personally or professionally? Although confessed and forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance, the sinner is still responsible for the ongoing effects of that sin. Until the last of the effects of our sins has diminished we will be consigned to Purgatory. Purgatory is an interim experience of the soul prior to entering into the grace of our Lord in Heaven. It is a time of purging away all our sin and the effects of that sin. All Roman Catholics should yearn to be united more closely to God. All Roman Catholics should also understand and fear his own powers of choice, and, if left to himself, the potential of falling from grace. The Church strives continually to impress on us the awfulness of sin and that we should fear and avoid it. By our nature we are fallen creatures, and our spiritual life on earth is our responsibility. Sin is our enemy, and while of our own strength we cannot avoid sin, with God's grace we can. If we but place no obstacle to the workings of grace we can avoid all deliberate sin. If we have the misfortune to sin, and seek God's grace and pardon with a contrite and humble heart, He will forgive us. Sin has its remedy in grace, which is given us by God, through His only-begotten Son. May you journey through this holy and reflective season of Lend bring you closer to our God and the grace given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Fr. COUNCIL WEBSITE: Our council will be utilizing the National Website. We can continue to use the same St Theresa’s council website name. This website has potentially many uses including the following: ACTIVATE council membership INCREASE member participation COMMUNICATE more efficiently with members and councils SERVE members more effectively ENHANCE community awareness ATTRACT new members, new ideas GENERATE INCOME for council activities Jay Werling volunteered to look into and administer the site for the council…thank you Jay INSURANCE INFORMATION: Ask eligible men to join. Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equal more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder’s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can.
