I must say as to what I have seen of Texas it is the garden spot of the world. The
best land and best prospects for health I ever saw and I do so believe it is a fortune
to any man to come here. There is a world of country to Settle...It's not required
here to pay down for your League of land every man is entitled to his head right of
400-428 acres--they may make the money to pay for it on the land. I expect in all
probability to settle on the Border or Choctaw Rio of Red River that I have no
doubt is the richest country in the world good land and plenty of timber and the

A mission was (is) a church built in a new area. Spanish priests, called friars,
came to the frontier to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and to get
them to work on the mission grounds farming and helping priests. The first
mission in Texas was built in East Texas in 1690. Other missions were built in
this area, largely to keep the French from taking over in East Texas. In 1718,
the Spanish began building missions in central Texas. “A town called Bexar
(later San Antonio) grew near some of the missions.” The missions in East
Texas declined, but the ones near Bexar thrived. These missions were large and
built to look like churches in Spain.
The availability of cheap land, the possibility of extending slavery, and creating
profitable farms lured Anglos to Texas. Settlement in Texas, led by empresarios
and immigrant agents, was a business venture. Anglo settlements were mostly
in East Texas, located on major rivers which were used for transportation. The
earliest settlements were near Nacogdoches. The Austin Colony (the Old 300)
had its central town of San Felipe de Austin on the banks of the Brazos River.
Other empresarios settled areas in east and south Texas. German immigrants
and other Europeans often went further west in Texas to areas around presentday New Braunfels and Fredericksburg.
