SECTION 2: ACADEMIC REGULATIONS
General definition
Undergraduate program/course
Undergraduate programs at FPT University Vietnam are designed based on the international training standards, the industry requirement and the regulations of Vietnamese Ministry of Education.
Undergraduate program at FPT University comprises 4 stages:

- Stage 1: English preparation (if required)
- Stage 2: Foundation
- Stage 3: On the Job Training (OJT) - the internship in a company
- Stage 4: Concentration
Study duration
According to academic schedule, undergraduate programs at FPT University consist of 8 semesters
(excluding English preparation if required) and OJT lasting 4 months.
The minimum program duration is 3 years (excluding time for English preparation) and the maximum duration is 7 years.
3. Semester
Semester is a portion of an academic year, the time during which university holds classes. FPT University has
3 semesters in an academic year, including Spring (January - April), Summer (May - August) and Fall
(September - December) semesters. A semester at FPT University normally lasts from 15 - 16 weeks.

Subject
A study program is comprised of subjects. Each subject is worth certain number of credits (usually from 2 -
4). Each subject has a unique code made up in accordance with regulations of FPT University.
A program normally consists of compulsory and elective subjects.
- Compulsory subjects refers to specific subjects a student must take in order to fulfill the university requirement before s/he gets a degree. You will be enrolled in such courses automatically.
- Elective subjects are also a part of your program but you are allowed to choose which one you will study according to university guidance.
Besides, there are conditional subjects whose results are not counted towards your semester GPA or total
GPA, yet must be completed to be qualified such as Foundation English Certificate if required, Physical
Education, OJT, Start Your Business (SYB), etc.
Credit
Credit is a unit that gives weighing to the study value or time requirement of a program. It is also used to measure the study progress of students (based on the number of credits that they have accumulated).

One credit is equal to approximately 12- 15 hours in class or 45 hours of on-the-job training. In order to complete 1 credit, students need at least 30 hours for self-studying (apart from class time).
The maximum credit load that a student may register for depends on his/her program.
6. Study Assessment
At the end of each semester, FPT University will carry out assessment to evaluate study result of students based on some criterions below:
- The credit load required in a semester is defined by FPT University (for compulsory subjects) or chosen by student at the early of semester (for elective subjects). It is also called semester study load.
- Semester GPA, or grade point average, is the measure of academic achievement, calculated by dividing the total number of grade point received by the total number attempted in the semester
- Cumulative GPA, is also the measure of academic achievement, from the beginning to the present point of time
- Accumulated course load is the number of credits gained from subjects graded at least 5 over 10
II. Academic Organizing
1. Academic system
FPT University has been applying credit accumulation. Students will follow the study schedule arranged by
FPT University and can proactively register optional courses by self.

Class
- Class size is beyond 20 but no more than 30 students.
- In other special cases, the number of students per class will be decided by The Rector of FPT
University.
Study schedule
At the beginning of every semester, students will receive the study schedules with syllabus of each subject.
4. Course registration
As mentioned above, students will do compulsory subjects (decided by the university) and elective subjects
(chosen by self). They can also enroll or withdraw the subject. To register for a subject, please log in the system at: http://fap.fpt.edu.vn
, select Hoa Lac campus (HL).
Registration procedures must be finished within one week before semester starts.
5. Repeat a subject
When you fail a compulsory subject, it is your responsibility to register for repeating it in that semester or other next semesters until you pass.

When you fail an elective subject, you are required to register for repeating it or another equivalent one according to school regulations.
Students are permitted to retake a previously passed subject to get improve their grade. Under these circumstances, the last result will be calculated in GPA.
In special cases, the Rector will decide the subject that students will repeat. The fee for repeating a subject, in case the student did not break any school rules, is normally half of the fee for doing such subject the first time.
Such fee should be paid to the accountant.
Attendance
Any student who does not attend class more than 20% of a subject will not be permitted to sit for final exam and have to repeat that subject.

Withdrawal and postponement
If you would like to withdraw from the program, or to postpone your study, please fill in the interruption form. The form must be received at least 07 days before the new semester starts. In case of postponement, students can preserve their study results of the previous semester.
Compulsory interruption
This is applied for students:
- Who do not meet the essential requirements for transferring to the next study stage.
- Who violate school regulations. During this suspension time, they are not allowed to participate in any activities at school.
- Other cased determined by FPT University
Credit transfer
Students may require FPT University to recognize their credits obtained in another Higher Education Institute or University. Students who have subjects with transferred credit accepted by FPT University will not have to repeat those subjects on campus. However, the grades earned from those transferred subjects will not be counted to calculate GPA.
10. Stage transfer
Students are only permitted to transfer to the next stage of program when they finish all study duties in the previous one.
11. Permanent Suspension
Student will be suspended from FPT University if violating one of the terms below:
- Their study duration is over the maximum duration allowed at university according to FPT University regulations.
- They do not finish financial duties with university
- Other cases defined in the school regulations
III. Course Examination

Students are permitted to take the final exam if they can meet the requirements defined in the syllabus and other specific requirement (if any) of that subject.
Based on the study performance, excellent students can be exempted from taking the mid-term or final exam.
In these cases, they will get the maximum grade for that subject.

Course Assessment
We will evaluate study performance based on: regular tests, practice, attendance, mid-term, assignment and final exam, among which final exam is strictly required. Content and duration of these types of assessment are defined in the syllabus of each course. You will pass a subject if you can meet the requirements stated in the syllabus. The final exam will be held twice. You can choose once or twice to improve your result. The final result is the last seat exam. The exam schedule is defined by exam department.
Appeal the exam result
You have right to appeal your exam result within 7 days from the publishing time of result. After verification, the revised grade is the final result.
Verification fee is only refunded to you in case there is a change in result.
4. Violation of exam regulations
Students who violate exam will be handled in accordance with the Exam Rules.

The GPA is used for assessing scholarships, awards and degree rating.

V. Graduation
1. Capstone project/Thesis
Capstone project/thesis which consists of no more than 10 credits is compulsory for every FPT student. In case you do
2. not pass this, you have to register to redo it..
Capstone project/Thesis evaluation
Your capstone project/thesis documents must be completed before the final presentation schedule time.
Graduation Committee founded by The Rector is responsible for assessing graduation project/thesis defense.
You can register to re-present your project/thesis if you do not pass in the first time or you want to improve your result. The duration between 2 times is within 1 month. Your final result will be calculated as 80% of mark in the second time.
The result of graduation project/thesis is also counted to your total GPA.
3. Graduation requirements
All students enrolled in an undergraduate program at FPT University must fulfill the following university requirements to graduate:
- Student is not prosecuted for crime at the time of graduation assessment.
- Physical Education and OJT are finished.
- All required subjects are completed with the minimum cumulative GPA of 5 (according to grade scale 10).

Upon your graduation, The University would send you three documents (you would not receive them right after the completion of your study; it will take a while for the documents to get to you, but you will get them eventually)
- Confirmation letter: This is a piece of paper that confirms that you complete the courses in the program, and states the status of the courses you took: pass/fail/retake, etc. It would also include a condensed list of your grades for those courses in the back of the paper. This confirmation letter could be used as temporary transcripts until you receive your actual certificate; however, it cannot replace your certificate.
- Degree certificate: Students graduate with an FPT degree certificate granted by Vietnam Ministry of
Education.
- Transcripts: This is a piece of paper that states your grades. It will also include a guideline about grading procedures. You would receive your transcripts along with your degree.
Note
The student who does not graduate will be provided with the transcripts of the subjects completed at the university.
