Waste management at New Hope College School: New Hope High School Address: Stadium Street, Orange Walk, Belize C.A. Phone #: 322-3389 Team Members: Cristian Sorto, Aaliyah Novelo, Christian Aguilar, and Kaila Figueroa Teacher: Mr. Hiram Cadogan Problem New Hope College is located at the end of Orange Walk town. We take pride in our school and are very interested in all matter affecting our school. As a result we have observed a significant problem in our school. Firstly students are uneducated about the effect of waste pollution within the environment and also the strategies to alleviate this problem. This leads to the major problem which is that garbage containers are filled quickly with the different garbage over the day and can be seen overflowing and thus polluting the environment. Also the garbage truck comes to pick up garbage once a week as a result the bins remains filled and overflowing until the truck comes. We have notice as well that sometimes the truck comes and is unable to take all the garbage and some remain. Teachers try their best to use garbage bags to collect the garbage from students with garbage bags but when they are placed together different animals scatter the garbage due to the food items they contain. The items being sold at the cafeteria consist of mostly plastic bottle juices which the student purchase because it is cheaper and majority of the food items sold are wither wrapped in plastic or is in a Styrofoam plate. These few item help make up the garbage at our school and have overpopulated the bins. We have notice as well that this is not only a problem at our school but also in the community for they sometime dispose of the garbage in their yards which build up and the rain help spread the garbage around the community and sometimes it ends up around the school. Objectives of the project The objectives of this project seek to: Educate the students at New Hope College and the surrounding community about the importance of proper waste disposal. Introduce new strategies to dispose waste within the school and community. Introduce the three sustainable measures to student (recycle, reuse and reduce). Create awareness and a club at the school that will assist in ensuring that waste are being manage properly. Solution The first step will be education of student about the importance of waste disposal. At different locations of the school garbage bins will be places. The garbage bins will have three different labels; biodegradables, plastic bottles and others. With this student will be able to separate the garbage for it to be recycled or reused. To produce less bottle the cafeteria will need to sell juices in reusable cups that will be washed and reused and limit the amount of plastic cola being bought for the week. Diagrams and labels will be created to make understanding of how students need to properly dispose of their garbage. Students will conduct a community clean up and will take that time to educate the community of what they need to do to lessen their garbage amount. A garden will be created at our school and will be maintained by the students. The biodegradables from the garbage will be made into a compost pile for our garden. The school does not have an agriculture program as a result student will have hands on experience gardening and planting using the sustainable practices. Student can use bottle in a recycling and reuse competition where they will come up with ways to deal with the garbage bottles. Prizes will be assigned to the winning groups. This will help motivate student to practice and help with the garbage problem.
