Keep the surface of your competition disc clean and undamaged. Use a protective sleeve or jewel
case for ALL discs. After you have tested your competition disc, use a practice disc for everyday
use and save your competition disc strictly for competitions.
Please use only wav. files when creating your festival discs. If your edit is an .mp3 or some other
format, please convert it to a wav. prior to burning. If your file format is an odd one that cannot be
converted, be prepared with your iPod or other playback device as a back up. Always have a back
up disc or portable playback device with you at competition. Even perfectly made discs can fail.
Use reputable conversion and burning software, (ie: 123 Copy DVD, 1 Click DVD Copy, Roxio
Creator), and always select burn “music”or “audio” disc and not “data” disc.

MODERN/CONTEMPORARY SECTION
MODERN/CONTEMPORARY
Modern/Contemporary dance is a constantly evolving dance form that uses the entire body to express
abstract ideas. Distinguished by its use of expression, movement invention, and three-dimensional
shaping of the body and space, it is dance that can examine the limitations of classical ballet and
pushes the boundaries of form and style. Choreography may contain elements of stylized techniques,
such as Graham, Humphrey, Limon, Dunham, Horton, Cunningham, etc., including the use of
contraction and release, spiral, fall and recovery, successional movement, opposition, hinge, flat back,
and shift of weight. Does not focus on tricks but rather on principles of movement.
It is incumbent upon choreographers and parents to ensure that costumes, lyrics and movement are
age appropriate.
Dancers can enter two different SOLOS, DUOS AND GROUPS. The first piece will be entered in
the “A” class and the second, if two modern/contemporary pieces are being performed, will be
entered in the “B” class. See below. Dancers will dance each of their two pieces at different times in
the week.
