CS-38 5/23/2016 4:15:00 PM - 5/23/2016 5:15:00 PM Capsule Endoscopy: It’s not a “BIG” deal; it is a “SMALL” bowel capsule Capsule Endoscopy (CE) now has an established role in patients with persistent obscure gastrointestinal bleeding who have had a negative gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The role of capsule endoscopy has expanded recently in diagnosing Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease, and screening for Familial Polyposis Syndrome. Evidence shows 43-71% of Crohn’s disease were diagnosed in suspected patients who had other diagnostic studies normal. The availability of Patency Capsule has overcome the potential risk of capsule retention in high risk patients. Capsule endoscopy can avoid invasive procedures and take better treatment decisions in some patients. The reading of CE videos remain a time consuming exercise for gastroenterologists. A nurse specialist interested in small bowel may wish to take up this role. This session will teach the entire capsule endoscopy procedure, indications, and technique of reading, analyze and interpret the findings to become an expert in CE reading.
