A. Personal Statement
My area of research and specialized training is in GI motility and physiology, including
electrogastrography, gastric emptying, high-resolution esophageal manometry, pH tests, breath
testing, impedance, the wireless motility capsule (SmartPill), anorectal manometry, and biofeedback
therapy. I received training in GI motility at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai during residency and fellowship.
My past mentors include both the current president and immediate past-president of the American
Neurogastroenterology & Motility Society (ANMS), Drs. Lin Chang and Satish Rao, and also Drs. Jeff
Conklin and Mark Pimentel. I was a recipient of the ANMS Clinical Training Award in motility in 2013,
which I used towards obtaining specialized training in gastric and anorectal motility from Dr. Satish
Rao at Georgia Regents University. I presented research on the relationship between methane and
gastric motor function at the ANMS annual meeting in 2013. I have also published several high
impact studies in the field of GI motility, including on post-infectious IBS, methane production in
constipation, and use of a GLP-1 agonist for treatment of short bowel syndrome. I currently assist Dr.
Ravi Mittal in directing the GI Motility and Physiology Center at UC San Diego.
