Short Biographies of speakers for the Diabetes Certificate Module: South Africa 2014 Tony Cavallerano, OD FAAO Tony Cavallerano is an Adjunct Professor of Optometry at the New England College of Optometry and an attending optometrist at VA Boston Health Care System. He has directed Telehealth programs for more than a decade, working on Tele-retinal initiatives related to diabetes and retinal disease. He is the past editor of two peer-reviewed professional journals, he has authored several book chapters and over 65 professional journal articles. He has lectured and presented at numerous local, national and international meetings and he is a fellow of American Academy of Optometry, the American Optometric Association, and he is a founding member of the Optometric Retina Society. David Shein, MD Dr. Shein practices Internal Medicine at Reservoir Medical Associates in Cambridge, MA and is a member of the Medical Staff at the Mount Auburn Hospital, also in Cambridge. Dr. Shein holds teaching appointments as Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the New England College of Optometry and Instructor at Harvard Medical School. He is also Medical Director at the Mount Auburn Cambridge Independent Practice Association. Dr. Shein graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Deaconess Hospital; both in Boston. Previously, Dr. Shein worked in primary care at Beth Israel Healthcare Brookline; MIT Medical in Cambridge; and was on the medical staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He also served as Medical Director at Verisk Health in Waltham, MA. This will be his third year with GIO in South Africa. Dr. Shein’s practice offers adult primary care; his interests include preventive health, patientcentered care, clinical aspect of population health and health care quality. When not in the office, he enjoys photography, traveling, hiking, running and bicycling Dr. Martine Joffe Pending Clint Dalglish: Biokinetics In 1999 I matriculated from Glenwood High School, Durban South Africa. Thereafter I completed my business and marketing diploma from Working World Business College. I’ve always had a real passion for sport and fitness so I pursued a career in biokinetics at the University of Pretoria where I completed my BA Human Movement Science degree in 2006. After completing my undergraduate degree at TUKS I completed my BSc (Honors) degree in biokinetics from the University of Zululand in 2007. I have been in private practice for about 7 years. My practice is situated in Manor Medical Centre, Sandton Johannesburg. As a biokineticist I specialize in orthopaedic rehabilitation through exercise which involves the prescription of specialized exercises to help reduce muscular pain, improve mobility, and return individuals to full strength post operation or injury. We also provide specialised exercise protocols for individuals who suffer with chronic diseases and disabilities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disease Henrieke Eileen Fagan: Diabetic Nurse Educator Arrived in South Africa from Canada 1981 Student nurse at Addington Nursing College and did the Integrated General Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing diploma followed by a year of Midwifery. Married, moved to Johannesburg, worked at Sandton Clinic in Neurology Ward, had my two children, Ciaran and Maeve. After Maeve was born, I worked at the first Travel Clinic in South Africa i.e. British Airways Travel Clinic, part time and then locum for the next 15 years. Employed by Drs. Kahanovitz and Kadish to start a diabetes clinic. Attended the 5 days CDE Diabetes Course in 2009 Commenced and finished with distinction the Post Graduate Diploma Course in Diabetes through the University of Glamorgan. Received “Life Scan Diabetes Travel Award” in 2012 and last year, Manor Medical Diabetes Centre received the “Best Glycaemic Clinic” Award from the Centre of Diabetes Excellence. Attended the International Diabetes Federation Congress in Melbourne Dec 2013. Patel OD FAAO Bina Patel is a full time member of the faculty The New England College of Optometry. She currently is the director of International programs and has been instrumental in developing post graduate educational programs in Optometry internationally. She is involved in lecturing in several courses at the college with an emphasis in primary eye care, teaching principles and practice of optometry including diagnostic techniques. She previously taught optometry interns and provided eye care services to community based health centers around the Boston area. She continues to provide volunteer eye services to the underserved population in Latin America and in addition currently working as a certified image reader at the Joslin Diabetes Center’s Beetham Eye Institute which specializes in diabetes eye care. She is currently serves on several committees such as the Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanities (VOSH region committee, American Schools and Colleges of OptometryInternational Optometric Education Committee and a committee member for World Council of Optometry
