SCHOOL NEWS

A MESSAGE FROM RUTH FINN OSHIN, WIS PTO PRESIDENT

Dear WIS Parents,

Please join us on Thursday, October 13th for our joint PTO meeting with

Hurlbutt at 9 AM in the WIS Cafetorium to MEET OUR CANDIDATES. Thanks to Dawn Egan for putting this informative program together and inviting all

12 candidates for selectman, board of finance and board of education. It is essential that everyone educate themselves about the views of the various candidates so you can vote intelligently on November, 8th. Living in our small town means that every vote counts and also an important lesson to teach our children about the democratic process.

Directories are going to the printer and will be sent home with your child in the approximately 2 weeks. We extended the PTO registration deadline for incoming Kindergarten families since WIS and Hurlbutt share one book. I am sure you can imagine what a big undertaking that this is for our volunteer directory team: Isabelle Alvarado, Jodi Sacchetta and Pam Toft.

I am sure you will be happy to know that my gift wrap order arrived today because I ordered through the website. I am bringing the chocolates to my cousin's house this weekend in a very stylish re-usable bag, the baseball

wrapping paper will be great for all of the birthday gifts that we bring to boys, we will be eating a lot more celery and carrot sticks now that we have a special container for the fridge and I know that my mother will love her

Crabtree & Evelyn hand cream sampler now that the weather is getting colder. You can still place your order at www.genevieves.com

.

Have you started reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret? One Mom told me that her 5th grader finished the book in an hour and a half. Liz Walzman,

4th grade Mom and Scarsdale Librarian and Jason Bluestein are putting together an exciting and interactive event for parents and children on

November 7th at 7 PM. Please let me know if you would be willing to organize one of the interactive stations which will bring the book to life and are still highly top secret. We are also finalizing the logistics of our Family

Fun movie night and we will be offering $5 movie tickets on Friday,

December 2nd.

Thanks to everyone who has been voting for our school at www.thedailyweston.com

. We are within reach of our 500 votes so please vote now and I can stop asking, reminding, begging, pestering and bothering you. We are going to use this "found" money for indoor recess games and art supplies for all 26 classrooms. Room parents will be asking parents to buy games and supplies and the PTO can fill-in as necessary.

In closing, I was very sad to hear about the death of Steve Jobs this week.

Video calling was only available on the Jetsons and Star Trek when we were growing up and now we have it on our phones. Here is the link to his very inspiring 2005 Stanford commencement speech... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA .

Warm Regards, Ruth Finn Oshin

WIS FAMILY BOOK CLUB

Have you started reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret with your child yet?

THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET

A novel in words and pictures by Brian Selznick

The Book Club is for students in Grades 3-5 and their parents. The program is set up like an informal book club. Students, families, and staff are invited to read the book, participate in a school event on the night of November 7, and see the movie during a Family Fun Night on Friday, December 2nd.

More details about each night will follow later this month.

The PTO has purchased a copy of the book for each classroom and teachers will be introducing the book to students and get them excited about this upcoming program. Finding a book that appeals to everyone is sometimes difficult. This one might be a challenge for many 3rd graders but with the help from parents they will enjoy the many adventures that Hugo takes us through his story.

Copies of the book will be available in the LRC and at the Weston/Westport

Library. The book will also be available for sale at the Book Fair on

October 24-26th.

We hope you and your children will be able to join us! Have fun reading!

WIS YEARBOOK

Hello WIS Parents! We are the chairs of the WIS Yearbook 2011-2012 and we are looking forward to a fun year of taking photos and putting together a great book for all the students at WIS. Chris and I have put our committee together but we still need some help! We are looking for parents to help out with 3rd grade. This would involve anything from taking pictures to coordinating the 3rd grade input. This is a great opportunity to help create a wonderful memory for your kids – and it’s a lot of fun! If you are interested, please email Chris or myself with your level of interest. Thank you!
