Visiting Scholar Fund – Roles & Responsibility Academic Units: Visiting Scholars are normally hosted by an academic unit as approved by the Dean or other senior administrator. In addition to academic departments, other academic units such as the Library, Student Services or other service-function areas can apply for colleague visits under the Visiting Scholar fund. “Hosted” means the visitor is physically located in the department making a proposal and would have a primary faculty member or other UFV host s/he is collaborating with or has been assigned to act as the visitor’s “guide” while at UFV. A visitor can be hosted for a short period (1 – 3 weeks) or for a full term. The department would determine whether or not the visiting scholar would benefit by visiting UFV and whether the department/UFV would benefit from the visit depending on the congruency of collaboration interests and the potential to strengthen an ongoing partnership or initiate a new partnership. Associate Vice President of Research, Engagement & Graduate Studies: If there is a significant research collaboration component between the Visiting Scholar and a UFV faculty member/department, then UFV’s Research Office participates as a co-host. In some cases a Visiting Scholar may be of interest to UFV as a result of his/her research or academic pursuits, but it may not be clear that the visitor would have a “home” department at UFV. In these cases the AVP would determine whether or not her office would host the visitor. UFV International: UFV International allocates funds each year from International student revenues to the Visiting Scholar Fund. UFV International also issues calls for applications and promotes the program within UFV. Other services provided by International include issuing invitation letters (often needed for visas) and participating in particular social/hosting events. International would also facilitate meetings regarding the development or expansion of any partnerships or agreements that would result as an outcome of the visit. However, each Visiting Scholar is housed and hosted by an academic department or other UFV office and/or the Associate VP of Research, Engagement & Graduate Studies office.
