Training Organisations and safety regions are given the opportunity through the Academy for Crisis Management to purchase tickets for the use of the Mayor Game within their own training. Screenshot Mayor Game Until recently the training of administrators using serious games seemed quite a challenge. The Utrecht School of the Arts, Thales, T-Xchange (cooperative partnership between Thales and the University of Twente) and TNO have changed all this. They have co-developed the Mayors Game within the GATE (GATE = Game Research for Training and Entertainment) research programme. The Dutch Society of Mayors is playing a key role in establishing the scenarios and dilemmas, and want to continue doing so in the coming years. The government and the GATE participants have funded the research fifty-fifty. This innovative tool now makes it possible for the first time to use serious gaming to train administrators in administrative decision-making during crises. TICKETS FOR OWN TRAINING USE The Mayors Game is available via the NIFV’s Academy for Crisis Management as a web-based training tool for security regions. Later this year the tool will most probably also be available for crisis dilemma training on a national level via the NCC Academy. Training organisations and security regions will be offered the possibility via the Academy for Crisis Management to acquire tickets to use the Mayors Game within their own training programmes. There will be various kinds of tickets: for intervision training in a small group and for larger group training, both under supervision. There will also be tickets for demo purposes and for e-learning. Supervisors will follow a training course in using the Mayors Game at the Academy for Crisis Management, receiving advice on how best to use the Mayors Game as a tool during training and how to give shape and substance to a training course as a whole. They will be asked to participate in a community that is geared to the further development of administrators’ competencies. Only trained supervisors may supervise training. The ticket revenues will be invested in facilitating the community of supervisors and in an innovation programme that focuses on improving and innovating the Mayors Game. The revenues will also help to cover the administrative and technical costs (including a helpdesk). So, the innovation continues.
