Koldenhoven, emphasized to the students the
many career opportunities that are available at
the CDC. This was truly a great experience for

DESKTOPS 4 ED
The Newton College and Career Academy
(NCCA) Computer Club is made up of six
student associates in Ms. Ashley Dawson’s
Information Technology Support Class. The
six associates refurbished surplus desktop
computers in order to provide low income
families with a computer. In order to receive a
computer, a middle school student and his/her
parent had to complete an online application
through Survey Monkey and the link was
posted on all of the Middle Schools’ websites
and the NCCA website. One desktop per
household was awarded this year by lottery
drawing. This offer was given to middle
school students receiving free or reduced lunch
benefits only, and next year the program might
be extended to the High School level based on
demand. The first distribution was held on
December 2nd, 2014. The Computer Club
awarded 15 desktops, and there will be an
additional 25 desktops distributed in Spring,
2015. The student associates dressed in their
Business Attire and stayed after school to
present the computers to 15 excited families on
December 2nd. They demonstrated the basic
‘care and feeding’ of a computer, and how to
hook up the cables once families got their
computer home. The associates also

demonstrated how to download Microsoft
Office Suite available through the student’s
Office 365 e-mail account. The money made
from this endeavor will go back into the
program and hopefully the associates will
exceed next year’s goal by refurbishing 25 or
more desktop computers in the spring! A
special thanks to the NCSS Technology
Department, Ms. Ashley Dawson, NCCA
Administration, and the Work Based Learning
and Entrepreneurial Business Incubator Staff
for their support.
NCCA Computer Club members and staff
worked together to refurbish NCSS desktop
computers, making them "like new" to be
donated to students for a $25.00- onetime fee.
Once the parent signed the purchase
agreement, the $25.00 processing fee was nonrefundable. What is included in the packageblack case CPU with Intel Core 2Duo
processor, minimum 2 GB of RAM, minimum
80 GB hard drive, one black keyboard, one
mouse, one LCD monitor, and necessary
cables with Vista OS, and new mouse pad.
