NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY SPRING DESKTOPS 4 ED The Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA) Computer Club is made up of six student associates in Ms. Ashley Dawson’s Information Technology Support Class. The six associates refurbished surplus desktop computers in order to provide low income families with a computer. In order to receive a computer, a middle school student and his/her parent had to complete an online application through Survey Monkey and the link was posted on all of the Middle Schools’ websites and the NCCA website. One desktop per household was awarded this year by lottery drawing. This offer was given to middle school students receiving free or reduced lunch benefits only, and next year the program might be extended to the High School level based on demand. The first distribution was held on December 2nd, 2014. The Computer Club awarded 15 desktops, and there will be an additional 25 desktops distributed in Spring, 2015. The student associates dressed in their Business Attire and stayed after school to present the computers to 15 excited families on December 2nd. They demonstrated the basic ‘care and feeding’ of a computer, and how to hook up the cables once families got their computer home. The associates also NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT demonstrated how to download Microsoft Office Suite available through the student’s Office 365 e-mail account.
