NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT SUMMER NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY Code Quest Two Newton College and Career AcademyEntrepreneurial Business Incubator associates on The Web Tech team competed in a computer coding contest on April 18th at Lockheed Martin in Marietta. The competition hosted over 40 High School teams participating in Advanced to Novice levels. Each team had to solve 15-20 and figure out missing code issues through JAVA problems in only 2.5 hours. STATE WINNERS IN THE FOREST MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTS PROFICIENCY RECOGNIZED AT THE 87th GEORGIA FFA STATE CONVENTION MACON – (APRIL 24, 2015) – Winners of the Forest Management and Products Proficiency were recognized at the 87th Georgia FFA State Convention held at the Macon Centreplex on April 23-25, 2015. Paton Day of Newton County placed first in the proficiency competition, followed by Broxton Crosby of Echols County, and Joshua Peterson of Dodge County, finishing second and third, respectively. Proficiency awards are granted to FFA members who have excelled in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Participants in the Forest Management and Products Proficiency implement best management practices for the conservation, or NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT accumulation, of the economic value of a forest and/or forest products through practices such as thinning, pruning, weeding, stand improvement, reforestation, insect and disease control, planting, and harvesting. The Forest Management and Products Proficiency was sponsored at the state level by The Twilley Lands, and at the national level by John Deere and Ram Trucks. All winners received a plaque and a cash award. State winners receive $100, as well as $500 travel money to attend the National FFA Convention. Additionally, the advisor of the state winner also received $100 cash. Second place winners received $50 and third place winners received $25. The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, changed its name in 1988 to reflect the growth and diversity of agriculture. There are more than 500,000 FFA members nationwide. The Georgia Association has more than 37,000 members, making it the 3rd largest Association in the nation. The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success, through agricultural education. WBL Employer Appreciation The work based learning and Entrepreneurial Business Incubator hosted an Employer Appreciation Reception May 6th. NCCA’s culinary arts students catered the event. They were extremely professional and the meal was a great success. Eastside engineering students etched the glass awards we gave. NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY SUMMER Several of our business incubator students were recognized. EBI companies Desktops 4 Ed, Home Grown Digital and Music & Memory employers were recognized. Home Grown Digital, Right at Home and Jared Rutberg, JRJ Construction were all recognized as ‘EBI Companies of the Year’ . Our ‘WBL Employer of the Year’ was The Covington News. Dr. Lizella Dodson, Porterdale Elementary Principal, was given an award for partnering with the NCCA ECE associates. Dr. Dodson is retiring this year and we wanted to give her recognition for going above and beyond in assisting our ECE NCCA associates with internships. Thanks so much! NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT SUMMER The students were presented with certificates for their achievement. The Pre K children had an opportunity to have an up close and personal lesson about the bees on view in Mr. Pollard's Class Also, each student had a chance to entire the MOS World Wide Championship. We have one student currently ranked 3rd place and should go on to compete in Florida this summer. DECA Nationals Finalists Two Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA) seniors, Keyondra Mitchell and Sydney Damiani, have been on the ride of their lives for the past three months. Having chosen to compete for their Marketing CTSO, DECA, both girls have spent their time testing, competing, and winning. Students Become Certified Students attending NCCA who are taking a Business class have had the opportunity to take one of the Microsoft Certification tests. Of 80 students tested 59 students this year have passed one of the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Tests. That is a jump of 25 students from last year’s numbers! The various certifications range from Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY These young women competed in the Marketing, Sales, and Service Events at both the regional and state level. Keyondra Mitchell competed in Restaurant and Food Service Management, representing the Sports and Entertainment Pathway at NCCA; Sydney Damiani competed in Apparel and Accessories, representing the Fashion Merchandising and Retailing Essentials Pathway at NCCA. Keyondra and Sydney placed in the top three at regionals to have a spot to compete at the state DECA level. NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT Once at Georgia DECA State Competition, each student finished within top seven in the state of Georgia and will be competing again at ICDC (Nationals) in Orlando, Florida. We would like to congratulate NCCA DECA Advisors Mariana Mansfield ED. S., Fashion Marketing Trainer, and Heather Fuller, Sports and Entertainment Trainer, for the accomplishments of their students. NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY SUMMER NCSS SCHOOLS QUARTERLY REPORT U.S. Department of Education Rep. Mr. Dennis Bega visits NCCA Science Students On May 12th 2015 a rep from the U.S. Department of Education visited Newton College and Career Academy. Science students presented projects, participated in a forum and expressed opinions and concerns as it relates to public education with Mr. Dennis Bega, a representative for Secretary Arnie Duncan. Several interesting topics were presented and discussed by students such as, homicide, infectious disease, media influence, and addictions. The rationale was to present information as it relates to epidemiology and public health to the U.S. Department of Education. Mr. Dennis Bega collaborated with science teacher Mr. Evern Williams for the purpose of hearing the voice of the students in both presentations and in open discussion forum. Seniors, Elise McDonald, Alcovy High, Cionna Jones, Newton High, Rehji Martin, Eastside High and Tucker Vaughn, Eastside sat on a panel discussion with Mr. Bega. "Thanks for an impressive visit; your students were engaged and energetic" Mr. Dennis Bega. Also in attendance was Emory epidemiology professor and author Dr. David Kleinbaum. “This was a rare opportunity to see a rep from the U.S. department of education taking notes from our students here in Newton County, I am so proud of them” Evern Williams.
