7 million members – 7 million voters MEDIA RELEASE 24 April 2013 BRUCE HIGHWAY COMMITMENT WILL SAVE LIVES The peak national motoring and mobility organisation, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), has welcomed a major commitment to upgrade the Bruce Highway as a significant step forward in improving safety and travel times in Queensland. “Upgrading the Bruce Highway is a national priority and this commitment will save lives,” AAA Executive Director Andrew McKellar said. The Federal Government has today announced it will invest $4.1 billion over ten years to upgrade and improve the condition of the highway. “This is a significant and well-targeted investment with the highway one of the most dangerous in Australia,” he said. The Bruce Highway is one of the top priority transport projects identified by the AAA in the national Demand Better Roads campaign announced on Sunday. “Motorists in Queensland deserve better roads and the commitment to this investment will improve safety on key stretches of the Bruce Highway,” he said. “It is also welcome that the planned upgrades will focus on crucial flood-proofing work,” he said. This announcement will be the first commitment to form part of the Demand Better Roads ‘Report Card’ of the major parties policies on transport and motoring issues. “It is encouraging to see that transport infrastructure will be a major focus of this federal election because ultimately, motorists do deserve better,” he said. The AAA and constituent clubs launched a campaign on Sunday to make transport infrastructure a major issue for the upcoming election – more information at DEMAND BETTER ROADS …ends For more information: Mr James Goodwin Director – Government Relations & Communications james.goodwin@aaa.asn.au (02) 6261 4403 0401 248 772
