Intervale Lowlands Bioblitz 2013
Jackie McCabe
This year’s Bioblitz is going to be conducted at the Intervale Lowlands farm in North Elba New York on
July 21, 2013. The Intervale Lowlands property is preserved by Nancy and Larry Master through a
conservation easement with the Nature Conservancy. A Bioblitz is when the
leading experts in multiple taxonomic fields come together along with
members of the surrounding community and collect/ identify as many
organisms as possible in a 24-hour time period. This data is then recorded and
filed with the US National Phenological Network to monitor ecosystem changes
in the area over short and long periods of time. Anyone can attend the event
and the local community members and student are especially encouraged to
show, since this is a great learning experience for everyone. The event adds information to the ongoing
Adirondack All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory at Paul Smith’s College (http://www.paulsmiths.edu/ATBI/).
Some of the partners involved in this year’s Bioblitz are the Wildlife Conservation
Society, Adirondack Research LLC, and the North Elba Land Conservancy. There are
also a number of professionals involved in this year’s event
including Dr. Ezra Schwartzberg from Adirondack Research
LLC, and the TWIG (Taxonomic Working Group) leaders
Brian McAllister from the PSC VIC, Daniel Kelting from Paul
Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute, Janet Mihuc from Paul Smith’s
College, and Craig Milewski also from Paul Smith’s College.
