Important Information
 Take/Re-take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible.
 Create an Activity Sheet and a Brag Sheet from the SPHS School
Counseling Web Page and email a copy to your School Counselor.
 Apply Early! Many Colleges have application deadlines of mid October and
November 1st for early notification. Some schools require you to complete
the application by the early deadline to be eligible for scholarships.

 Request recommendations from teachers if necessary, giving them as
much notice as possible. Also give them a copy of your Activity Sheet and
the Brag Sheet.
 Check each College’s website for admissions and scholarship information.
 Send your transcript electronically through www.cfnc.org to any NC
college or university. For colleges out of NC complete a Request for
Transcript form in the Counseling Office, return in 2 days to pick it up and
mail it.
 Create your Fastweb.com account at www.fastweb.com. This is a free
scholarship resource.
 Get prior approval for any college visit on a school day.

John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest Discipline: General Award: $500 - $5,000 Requirements:
Write an original & creative essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage
as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Describe and analyze the decisions, actions, and risks of an
elected public official in the United States since 1956 who has courageously addressed a political issue at the local,

Ron Brown Scholar Program Discipline: General Requirements: Must be academically talented, highly
motivated African American student who is currently a high school senior and plans to pursue a full-time
undergraduate degree. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Deadline: January 9

Gates Millenium Scholars - Bill & Melinda Gates Requirements: Open to African-Americans, American
Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American. Must be citizen, national or legal
permanent resident of the U.S. Must be nominated and have cumulative GPA at least 3.3 unweighted GPA(4.0
scale). Must have demonstrated leadership commitment through community service or extracurricular activities.
Must have significant financial need and eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. Deadline: All required forms must be

SAE Engineering Scholarship Program - Society of Automotive Engineers Discipline: Engineering or related
Science Award: $1,000-$10,000 for corporate-sponsored scholarships, $400 to full tuition for university sponsored
scholarships Requirements: Intention to earn degree in engineering or a related science; U.S. citizen; meet
minimum GPA, SAT or ACT scores as outlined in the individual requirements of each scholarship. Deadline:

Roothbert Fund Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $2000-$3000 Requirements: While the Fund does not
emphasize any particular form of religious practice or worship, it seeks to provide support to persons motivated by
spiritual values. The Fund has awarded grants to persons entering a wide range of careers. However, preference will
be given to those who can satisfy high scholastic requirements and are considering careers in education. Deadline:

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $500 Requirements: For female
graduating seniors who have applied to a 4 year college or university, reside in Gaston County or attend
high school in Gaston County, with minimum unweighted GPA of 2.75, and have taken the

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship Award: Up to twelve $2,000 college scholarships will be awarded to
students by the local AXA Advisors branch in our community. ; $10,000 scholarship to 52 students in each state,
Washington, DC and Puerto Rico; $15,000 additional scholarships to 10 nationwide recipients at the next competition
level. Requirements: Winners, known as AXA Achievers, must demonstrate: Ambition & drive; Determination to set &

Jagannathan Scholarship (NCSEAA-North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority) Discipline:

Girl Scouts Sylvia L. Holmes Scholarship Discipline: General Requirements: Female high school senior and
resident of Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Polk, and Rutherford counties. Young woman does not have to be a Girl
Scout to apply, but participation in the Pioneer Council will be looked upon with favor. Attendance at a N.C. college
or university will also be looked upon with favor. Deadline: Postmarked by February 1. See School Counselor
USDA/1890 National Scholars Program Discipline: Agriculture, Food and Natural resources. Award: Varies
Requirements: 3.0 GPA 1000+ on SAT, attend one of seventeen historically Black land-grant universities. Deadline:

National Co-Op Scholarship Program Discipline: General Award: $6,000 (renewable) Requirements:

Scholarships for Military Children Discipline: General Award: min. $1,500 Requirements: Available to
the unmarried children (under age 23) of active duty, Reserve/Guard, retired and deceased military
personnel. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students attending a community or junior college must
be enrolled in a program of studies designed to allow the student to transfer directly into a four-year
program. Additional Information: Applicants must ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are
currently enrolled in the DEERS database and have a current ID card. Please visit the sponsor's Web site
