In Part 2 of The Glass Castle, readers begin to see the degree of neglect that the
Walls children suffer. This lack of basic resources is a theme throughout the
story. In this assignment, you will prove to your reader whether or not Rex and
Rose Mary Walls fulfilled their responsibilities as parents.
Step 1: Brainstorm what you believe to be responsibilities of parents to children,
legally and morally. What should they be required, by law, to provide?

Rex and Rose Mary Walls fulfilled. Add any additional notes you feel necessary.

1. Rex and Rose Mary did not uphold their moral responsibility to care for
the children’s basic needs.

2. Because love and security are more important than material things, Rex
and Rose Mary should not be considered neglectful.
